Alot of people on campus go home but I’m a sophomore and I never stayed a full week on campus. I don’t see how people could do it except for the ones who live hours away. I live 40 minutes away so going home is easy for me. Do any of yall go home weekly or is it just me?
You lose 15 hours in travel time every weekend and that’s EASY for you???
Oh lol I meant 40 minutes away. Let me fix that
I’m graduated but I used to go home pretty much every weekend the first two years. I worked at home so it was a convenient excuse.
By junior year, I was working weekends in my university city so I wasn’t going home nearly as much.
Honestly, it wasn’t a big deal. I still have very close friendships. I found a spouse there. I got into every grad school I applied to (both graduate programs that I applied to- one a master’s in one field and another a PhD in a completely different field).
Go home if you want. Don’t, if you don’t want. It’s whatever makes you happy.
I’m from California and go to school in Oklahoma. For logistical reasons I only go home on some breaks. Personally I can’t imagine going home every weekend even if I did go to school 15 minutes away. There’s so much to do on campus and owing to academic and work demands, most of my friends are only free to hang out on the weekend.
I had roommate issues my first year and went home pretty much every weekend because of that. After that my parents gave me a limit of one weekend home per quarter, barring emergencies; the transportation costs were adding up and it’s an easy thing to cut down on. I only live about an hour and a half away from my school, but we’re on a tight enough budget already without dealing with the transportation costs of me going home constantly. At this point I prefer staying at school for a typical weekend though, because my roommates are great and starting in my second year I ended up living in the same apartment complex as most of my core friend group. Besides that, I get distracted from my schoolwork much more easily at home than I do when I stay at school.
Do whatever’s comfortable and feasible for you. It’s really that simple.
I go to school 13 hours away from home so…no, I don’t go home on weekends. Even if I lived close I don’t think I’d go home that often because I wouldn’t want to feel like I’d be missing out on anything going on on campus and I just feel like there wouldn’t be that much of a reason to. College is about being independent, after all.
Lol there’s nothing going around on my campus. Im in my dorm bored as ever and I don’t have a roommate so yea. I’m bored as crap when I have my rare free time.
Honestly, if I lived 40 min from campus, I would probably just live at home and commute everyday. No sense wasting money on a dorm/apartment when home is so close.
Honestly, I don’t think you should go home every weekend. You’re missing out on stuff going on around campus, and weekends are when I had time to just hang out with people and make friends, more so than during the week.
OP, from your posting history, just seem to dislike being in college.
I only go home on the ‘big’ holidays and semester breaks. And even then it’s typically just a short visit. I stay on campus during the summer as well.
There are so many variations of answers to this question. It all depends on the student, the distance they are away from home, their desire to go home, their academic/work/activity demands, and of course the resource they have to travel home frequently. My daugther is more than 7000 miles away from me as a freshman right now, she won’t come home until Christmas break because it takes nearly two days to travel, the jet lag is wicked, and it costs a lot. Would she like to come home for a weekend every now and then? Probably, but it aint going to happen.
7000 miles!? Wow. I go home to pretty much wash clothes and get some food and drinks to bring back to campus. I have work everyday so I miss out in events anyways so it doesn’t matter lol. Sundays are usually the day I go home and wash clothes and pack up food and drinks to take back.
I hear ya! S1’s college is more than 10,000 miles & 30 hours travel time each way. No weekend trips home for him either.
@RedThunder, See, your situation works for you.
@GMTplus7 , I hear you back!
I live 3-3.5 hours away from home, and I don’t plan on coming home again until Thanksgiving and then Winter Break. I only came home last weekend because it was a long weekend and I wanted to go to the Temple game, which was only ~20 minutes away from my house. Even if I lived somewhere closer to home, I’d still rarely leave the campus, because I feel like I’d be robbing myself of the college experience.
I might be the odd one out, but I’m about 6 hours from home and I’ll go home 1 or 2 times per semester, plus breaks. If I lived 40 mins away I’d be home every weekend (or I’d live at home!)
