Do you have to send in the $300 enrollment deposit before applying for housing? I know about the non refundable $45 housing deposit. Just curious if you have to commit to attending USC before applying for a dorm.

They say to apply ASAP after getting acceptance. But we need to see the financial aid package before making a final decision. Losing $45 isn't so bad, but we don't want to lose $300 if my daughter has to accept admission and then realizes we can't afford it. :(

Nope. I applied for housing before submitting my enrollment deposit.

Congrats on your D’s acceptance!

Thanks! I just noticed another post where someone said you need to pay $800 before securing a dorm room. Can’t that wait until after we find out what our financial aid will be? How soon does that need to be in? I was under the impression you could apply for housing with the $45 and they send an contract later–then the $800 is due.

2Leashes…I don’t know where that $800 figure comes from.
You pay the $45 to apply for housing with no commitment to attend USC (losing the $45 deposit if you decide not to attend) and you pay the $300 deposit by May 1st if you decide to attend.
In 2008, when my daughter enrolled, we paid the full housing cost and meal plan in August of that year, when all fees for the first semester were due. At least that’s what I remember.

You might have seen that in my post! I was responding to a student asking if the $800 payment (the student posted the amount - I remember it as $400) to *confirm your housing contract *had to be paid at the time the contract is confirmed, or if it could be covered by financial aid. (It can.)

As Sequoia says, it is NOT required to sign up for housing! Only a $40 deposit is.

Sorry for the confusion!!!

I went back to clarify my answer on the other thread - I hope I didn’t cause too much panic!

No problem alamemom! Actually, I saw $800 somewhere else. I also read about that amount in the literature that USC sent, as well as on their website. I was just confused as to when it’s actually due. I interpreted it to be that the housing isn’t confirmed until that $800 was sent in and the contract is signed. But, I also am reading in the booklet that they can only offer housing assignments to certified students. And that means submitting the USC Enrollment Committment Deposit from and non-refundable $300 enrollment deposit, or approved waiver. <--------???

So, I guess what I’m asking…how long will the $45 the housing application fee “hold the assignment” before you have to also send in the $300 enrollment deposit and $800 contract fee? I know the latter is refundable until June 15th.

I realize that the FA package will be here in the first week of April, hopefully. And then my daughter would need to make he decision before May 1. I’m just hoping that if she applies for housing now, they won’t expect her to come up with the larger fees until she’s made her decision (mostly based on the FA offer.) I also don’t want her to wait and possibly miss out on the housing she prefers.

To apply is $45 and you do not need to have submitted the enrollment deposit. To confirm the assignment is $800 which is done after the May 1 enrollment deadline, so you should know your financial aid package.

I do not believe it’s covered in financial aid but it does go towards rent, $400 for Fall and $400 for Spring.

2Leashes, I vaguely remember housing assignments coming out in early May. In any case, your housing contract confirmation will not be due until after the commitment deadline of May 1st.

Thanks to those of you who cleared this up for me. That really helps. Now if I can only get me daughter to sit long enough to read through all the housing options and maybe even check out the roommate search feature! She doesn’t seem to be worried that she hasn’t applied yet. I’m the only one with OCD around here, I guess. ;-)
