Do you know any one accepted with these stats?

So far I have only seen people with 3.9 and above 1500 get in and so i was wondering if any 3.8 with below 1500’s got in.

I was accepted with a 3.8 and 1470 SAT

Yes, some will get in. Most likely hooked students.

I know someone with a 3.77 GPA and 35 ACT that got in. But he is in pretty tough classes and got a 5 on AP Calc BC.

What’s a hooked student? Legacy?

Recruited athletes, legacy, children of mega donors, URM/low SES/first gen to college, or something very notable like being Greta Thunberg. Those groups are hooked, the rest are unhooked.

Funny you mentioned Greta Thunberg. She made a name already so she can easily get into some top schools.

Sorry I’m here kinda late, but I’ve met quite a few people with 1300s-1400s at Hopkins, whom have been successful thus far

Which reminds you that SAT/ACT scores have very little correlation to future success. I remind my daughter all the time that in the “Real world” no one is going to try and trick you with obscure questions.

Honestly, as I get further and further past my junior year of high school, I realize more and more that standardized testing is a crapshoot. I’m really glad that future teens don’t need to worry about subject tests, as those were even worse than the SAT/ACT-- I wasn’t necessarily ahead of the grain in terms of high school math curriculums (I ended up doing precalc & algebra 2 at the same time to get to calculus before graduation, as it was expected for a prospective physics major at a lot of the universities I was interested in), and I had to teach myself the content from the Math 2 subject test, and my final ACT score was from my senior fall. Plus there’s also the discussion of these tests being inherently classist.

There’s tons of students at top schools who end up struggling because they didn’t develop studying skills in high school, and there’s also plenty of students who have scores below the average for their university who do have those skills and thrive in college.

Also, I guess something unusual for CC is that out of the people I know who did get 1300s-1400s, none of them really had any ‘hooks’ – their essays just demonstrated their potential to lead. A friend of mine is one of these people, and she’s now in our student government and is literally one of the most impressive leaders I know, and manages to also juggle work on top of her full courseload.

What activities ? Ecs?

I’m going to have to agree with this here! My daughter is a freshmen at JHU (BME student) and did NOT submit a standardized test due to COVID. However, based on her PSAT score, while in the 90%tile was NOT what most would consider top tier college worthy for the math section. Nor was she National Merit or Commended. Granted if she would have taken the real SAT may have gotten a higher score but perhaps not.

That being said, Fall term she got an A in Calc. Which is why I think colleges are focusing on grades, school profile and data of success from prior admitted students. That is the best indicator of success. However, I have to admit… Math is her happy place. She loves math.

And you are right. If a student doesn’t have good study habits doesn’t matter the test score or GPA from HS. AND does the student want to be there versus parent forcing them. My daughter acts as though she’s doing to Disneyland when she’s heading back to JHU. She LOVES that school and it was HER top choice. I wanted her to stay home here in Calif. Everything makes a difference to college success.
