Scores needed for JHU admission as recruited athlete

Does anyone have any anecdotal data on how low JHU dips for recruited athletes who aren’t lacrosse players? Do they even compromise at all? Thanks.

I know a single football player and a single baseball player who attended JHU over the last five/six years. Anecdotally, I know that they will bend a bit and have (or had) a summary pre read process. As to how far they can bend both kids were very solid students although I don’t believe either were superstars. One of the two only ended up at JHU when he could not get in to Amherst, if that helps at all.

I heard Harvard requires a 30 ACT if that helps.

Based on what can be deduced from the Common Data Set, I doubt they take anyone except hooked applicants like lacrosse superstars under 30. The CDS, though, doesn’t have enough granularity to tell for certain how low they go for athletes. For the ACT, only 3.13% of incoming freshmen in 2015-16 fell in the 24-29 range, and only 3.18 are in the 500-500 SAT range. Still, that would work out to about 335 kids in those ranges–all of whom can’t be lacrosse players!

It’s likely that those 3.13% of ACT takers are the same 3.18% of SAT takers - took both tests and they were about the same. There are about 5400 undergrads, and just pretend that 1500 are freshmen, 3% is 45 being admitted with the lower scores(even 6% is only 90 admits with lower scores). It is just as likely that they aren’t all lacrosse players as that they aren’t all athletes. Other hooks would be in play too, from legacies to politician’s kid to internationals with special hooks.

According to the lax board, Hopkins had 8 women recruits and 15 men recruits for the 2015-16 year. That number may be off by 1 or 2, but is usually pretty close. If every one of those 23 was a special admit (I really doubt it as there are some smart lax players too), it would be half of the 45 with lower scores.
