I wear a suit at least once a month, but never for anything college related. It's church that calls for it.

I have a black suit and a navy blazer. I didn't even own a suit until my senior year of high school since I needed one for a banquet I got invited to where they said absolutely no blazers. Figuring I was done growing, I got myself one that I see myself wearing for years.

Men's Wearhouse is my top choice for suits and blazers. Their tailors are also good on any pair of pants you buy elsewhere.

last year I spent $900 on a suit and sports coat at mens warehouse then lost 80 lbs no one could taylor it after I had lost that much weight, recently i went to a small mens store in my area that had excellent service(not to say mens warehouse has bad service) and superior suits for a much better price. I would wait untill you are sure that you need one.

another idea is a really nice black blazer, and another blazer with nice trousers...

another way to dress things up is to NOT always wear a white shirt...an evening event with dress shirt can look really sharp, especially with "cool" tie

yueah.. my best friend always wore nice black pants, a dark red dress shirt, and a dark red and white striped tie for dress up things. i always thought it looked a lot sharper than most of the guys in suits, but whatever works...

suts are cheap in india too. about $100 to $200. the good ones. not decent, GOOD. but they take up a lot of space in my bag, and im not wearing one for the 32 hr journey from here. i checked out two websites, nordstrom and macy's, the later gave me cheaper suit options. IM gonna get one from there. can somebody please give me some links.

ahem, let's not forget who looked the other way on human rights to sign a bunch of trade deals with China...and who continues to buy Chinese products which doesn't help either...

Back to the OP...my suggestion is, get a nice suit (dark) and a tie or two. If it is an option, I would also pick up a pair of khakis and a jacket to go with them, and one or two ties to alternate between the two. Sometimes it's nice to have a gradient between formal and completely casual.

yeah a suit is a good thing to have but if you dont have one or cant afford one all you really need is a nice navy blue blazer and a few assorted dress shirts and you should be pretty well covered

I'm constantly amazed at the people who take every opportunity to hijack threads to get their personal political and social agendas posted on College confidential. If its so important, start your own damn thread in one of the more appropriate areas (parent's cafe comes to mind as there seems to be no end of political crap there) and have a discussion directly with those people who care....

(Damn, guess I am guilty now too....)

Back to OP's questio. A good suit will last you your entire college career and probably into your after college interviewing time if you take acare of it. And there will be occasions where you will want one even if it won't be "officially" required to wear one. Great way to impress or show respect for your date in certain circumstances. If you catch men's Wharehouse in July during one of their twice annual sales (the other is in January) you can get out the door with a nice suit, shirt, tie and socks for under $225-250, perfect for what you will need it for in college. But its better to buy ties, shirts, belt, socks and shoes at places like Kohl's as their prices can be pretty awesome on a regular basis. Just get the suit at men's wharehouse, where I have regularly seen very nice basic black, blue, grey suits (with and without stripes or paterns) for as little as $149 during their sales.

I would definitely get a suit because I'm sure you'll need it later. My brother just got a nice charcoal-grey suit from Men's Wearhouse for prom and is probably going to take it to college. I think it was around $300 for the full get-up - suit, shoes, tailor, a silk t-shirt thing, etc, maybe a little less. He still needs a dress shirt and tie, though, so add 60$-70$.

Well, I never needed one... my Summer Whites, Choker Whites and Service Dress Blues have served me well. Come to think of it... I may never need to buy a suit or a tux in my life.

Brooks Brothers has nice suits. You can get fitted for a decent one in any city for under $1500, most likely. They've got great ties, too.

I'd also recommend nice ties. Sensible haberdashery can really make you stand out - in a good way. I'd check out Brooks Brothers, Vineyard Vines, and J. Press, among others. And I'd stay the **** from some of what I've seen at Men's Wearhouse.

For shoes, I'd recommend Johnston & Murphy or Allen Edmonds. Handmade american shoes of superb quality...can't beat 'em.
