do you really need a laptop lock?

i mean, do you really? i have a somewhat old laptop...and it's kind of small...black...not sleek at all...and not very desirable. i'm wondering if i should even bother with a lock.

do laptops get stolen a lot around college or is it just a myth? and if they do get stolen, what's the most common place they do?

Sounds like something to research (where you are going). Laptops are often the most stolen items on campuses because they are portable, usually expensive, and easier to conceal than other expensive items. Someone might swipe it anyway on the off chance they can get good money for it. And if you happen to have had an important paper(s) on it....oh well.

If someone wanted an older laptop, they'd likely want it for parts, not for value. Anything made before 2003 is pretty much obsolete now, but some people still use older laptops (I have a 2000 model iBook, still in operation, that I use almost daily).

I don't have one since I carry the computer with me and don't let it out of my sight. I went through high school like this too (I would bring the laptop in if we were writing a paper so I could have my stuff all right there). And if I do put it down, it gets locked in my trunk. (not too many people want 18 year old Japanese cars)

Keep it on you at all times and you won't need a lock.

I bought a lock, but I also have a laptop bag that also serves as a really nice backpack. So I will also probably not let it out of my sight.

Bags are great. I have a vintage 1987 laptop bag from my first ever laptop. I use it as both a laptop bag and a messenger bag. And it looks great despite the age.

Here's the laptop backpack I have:

Get this:

The one above my original post is also very nice, but the affordability of the one I have is just ridiculous. I didn't get it for 19.99 like it is now, I got it as a grad gift, but my girlfriend only paid around 30 for it. It has everything you need. The laptop cushion area is very nice as well.

Basically, anything Targus is a great buy.

Ya my Targus is super sturdy, I would definitely buy anything Targus again.
