Do you really need ethernet cord and/or printer?

My son is the type to want to pack light and not have a bunch of stuff -- which I can understand, given how crowded his room is going to be. UCLA housing recommends bringing a printer, but I'm thinking in 2012, do you really print out that much? At our local colleges, kids submit papers and stuff online. How much do you really print and how easy is it to get access to a printer -- are there printers in study areas?

Also, ethernet cord? Necessary or not?

Thanks!

I dont know your son’s major, but depending on your major it could be some. If he is living in De neve, he can print for free at the De neve computer room on the 3rd floor, near the De Neve auditorium. It’s free for up to $5, basically each page is 5 cents, and the first $5 is free. It prints back and front too. I don’t know how Covel common works though I don’t go there often. You don’t really need an ethernet cord. You can also print in computer labs in libraries, but it’ll cost you. I’m an engineering major so I rarely had to print anything, other than for English Comp 3. Eng Comp 3 professor wanted hard copies of papers to edit and return, we did use turn-it-in.com too. A GE I took, History 9C(history of india), we wrote papers that had to be printed. Its more convenient than anything to have a printer, like if you want to print study guides to goh its extremely helpful. But again its up to you. BTW, some tables in the dorm rooms has a hidden backing at the back of the table that you can flip upward to give your desk another foot or so of space.

Even though I didn’t use it extremely often last year, I still plan on bringing mine for convenience, push comes to shove and I really don’t need it and its taking up space I was planning on putting it away into my closet.

Ethernet cords you can bring it? But I didn’t, the wifi worked well enough. They had multiple resident wifi connections. ;]

Thank you so much for this info, WorriedJrGirl. It’s really helpful. He’s in TFT, so I don’t think there’s a ton of writing? But I don’t know.

4th year student here.

Ethernet cable is totally unnecessary unless they play online games and have to have the fastest internet. Wireless will always be slower, but it will not be noticeable for basic needs such as YouTube, Facebook, Google stuff.

Most of the essays and coursework will be submitted online, but there are many classes that have midterms and finals that allow open-notes. Many students go into the test with 50+ pages printed out for as much aid as possible.

Powell Library, the main library on campus, charges 10 cents per page.

I do not own a printer, but if I were to get one, I would buy a non-colored laser printer for roughly $80 on Amazon. It can be a bit tedious going to the library before a class to print out something, but totally feasible.

Thank you vesper39 for this extremely helpful info! :)

We got the all-in-one printers that also would make a copy. Both D’s have used them LOTS.

Printers–unnecessary but convenient

Ethernet cords–not necessary but very convenient. At the end of last year, my roommate and I experienced unreliably slow WiFi in De Neve. Ethernet cords are a blessing for speed.

Ooh yeah my friend had to use ethernet in her dorm, for some reason it just wasn’t good signal there. I was fine in acacia though.

printers arent necessary, but it’s kind of nice having one. coming from a current student! hahaha
