Printers necessary?

Hi there,

I am wondering if I should purchase a printer in my dorm.

I will be living in NYU's apartment (Coral Towers probably, which is 10min walking from Washington Square) .... how are the computer and printing facilities at NYU?

Thanks

You can use the school's computer labs, libraries etc. to get printouts, but you have to pay for each sheet, and that can add up fast. You can get really cheap printers, or even free printer deals with some laptops.

Plus it's more convenient to have in your room.

After you get your room-mate assignment, you can chat with her and split some items like printer/refrigerator/fan/etc. that you only need one of per room.

Whoa, really? NYU makes you pay for each sheet? My sister (who goes to Barnard) said that she only has to start paying after 200 copies/per week or something like that!
Man, sometimes NYU makes me mad with all the extra fees they try to get out of you!

well, I could be wrong.....

but about the splitting stuff with your roomie thing -- it's probably easier to say "you buy the printer and I'll buy the fridge" than to strictly split costs, that way each of you knows what you get to take home for the summer / keep and treasure for the rest of your life / whatever.

You should bring your own. Why? I think it's a better idea.

a) Getting copies from your college's lab can be expensive.

b) It may be inconvenient to go somewhere to pick up a couple sheets at their hours. Could be a problem when you're trying to get somewhere with your documents with a limited amount of time or if you want something printed in the middle of the night.

c) The quality of the printers they have may not be the best... could be worse than today's sub $200 printers.

d) What if you want to print out some personal stuff? A game guide? Some photos for friends? Whatever.

e) It's not very shareable. The cost of the printer isn't going to be the big issue. It's the ink. Who's gonna pay for it? Who used it more?

f) You'll get more reliability if both of you have one. If one of you is out of ink or the printer is broken, you'll still have another one in the room - easy access. You won't have to resort to the lab and possibly encounter problem(s) mentioned above.

Maybe, just maybe, if you REALLY don't have enough room to keep one, then MAYBE share.

Just my thoughts.

I suggest, getting a laser jet, Go to staples and look at clearences. they will do the most work for you. Ink jets will print you 40 pages and you will need to buy another catradige again.

another option.

does your school use printing cards. Ones like little credit cards that you can put Money on and then insert when you need to copy somthing.

Here are some options.

1.Buy the card and use it.

2.Usually at the beginning of the school year, the people from xerox will come in to check everything out. These guys have Unlimited cards or have the codes to make it a non charge unit. Simply ask, It can and will work,

Find some Engineering studets, Many of them as in My school, are very smart and actually made a Business out of this. They has there laptops in the Library and for $20 bucks they made your printing Card Unlimited. Its not really to hard to do with a bar code reader.

If another Student works oin the Library or Printing place. They have Unlimited cards or free printing, Maybe they will just happen to loose there cards and it will end up in your hands,

Are you serious scrLK!!!

yes I am, we all have toi get by somehow, whether it be getting a few free $$, We pay 30K a year tuitions,

dont ya think printing should Be free.

Get your own cheap printer. I went a few weeks without my own printer and it was a huge pain. Then I ordered one from amazon.com - a Canon for less than $40 - and it made life infinitely easier. Make sure that the ink for said cheap printer is also inexpensive. My black cartridges are $4.99 online.

If you go inkjet, go Canon or Epson.

Avoid HP. Their ink costs are too high! Also avoid Lexmark, because their quality is very poor. I'm not familiar with Dells (though I hear they're getting better)

Unless there's a printer in your dorm building, you really should buy one. or if you're roommate's cool use there's and then offer to buy the cartridge...thats how it worked for me, cause i didnt bring one and before i used my roommate's id have to venture off to the library every time I wanted to print something. and like 10 cents a sheet or something.

redski-you're going to love USC if you're from VA (assuming you're talking about southern cali and not south carolina)

Thanks idiias. Yeah, it's Southern Cal for me.
