Or do you not tend to respect them?

I tend to respect emo kids more than I respect most people. But I probably don't know any emo kids, so I really don't have enough info.

Haha.. I don't like the scary kids who dye their hair black, wear black eyeliner and wear dog collars and spikes around their wrists ... I don't really hang around the emo crowd though :) So I'm just judging from outward appearances. I actually like emo music on occasion.. usually it's just really annoying whining though.

Not any more or less than any other high school stereotype.

Hate the music though.

Illogic's response sums up my feelings. Why do you have more respect for the "emo kids"

okay i have the wrong picture in my head

im thinking of ppl who pretend they're misanthropic and depressed, pretend that the world has wronged them, and who pretend to reject all forms of authority (especially school). [and who have no ECs and stay in their rooms all day]

because I'm one of those kids (I've been accused of being emo so much)

I respect some emo kids.

Though I think the phrase you're thinking of is "depressed antisocial loner."

(I respect some of those too. It's very situation-dependent.)

I don't respect emo kids, because they are egotistical. They think people should feel sorry for them because they kid themselves. That's a dumb publicity stunt.

I don't respect people who feel sorry for themselves. I feel sorry for myself too much, but at least I try to stop. Emo kids think that feeling sorry for themselves makes them superior. They think that other people are "shallow."

People who have no social skills often adopt the attitude that they're better than everyone else as a defense mechanism. They trick themselves into believing that they don't want to talk to anybody, instead of facing the truth. The truth is that they want attention but they don't know how to get positive attention, so they resort to negative attention.

I agree with linzoy. The emos should look around and realize how fortunate they are. They're living in the ****ing United Sates of America! There are millions of people who're dying to be in the same position!

ignores annoying pop cultural stereotype attached to the word 'emo'
Sure, I respected emeotional people.

No.

Next question, please.

I respect everyone.

Linzoy, you have no idea what those people are going through at home. Maybe they have a right to feel sorry for themselves. Yes, they should be thankful for what they have.

But the thing is, you don't really appreciate having a place to live until you don't have one anymore. What if they're being abused? What if they just lost a family member? It's not always just that they're antisocial. Everyone deserves your respect (with the obvious exceptions of like murderers and such).

I don't really respect emo kids for the reasons previously aforementioned. I really don't know what kind of image you have of emo kids, but when I think of emo kids, I think of a mixture of goth and grunge -- you have the all-blackness of goth combined with the suicidal nature of grunge and there you have emo. The emo kids are the pseudo-intellectual people who talk about how society has wronged them by indoctrinating today's youth into mainstream culture, with their Hollister and their Abercrombie and they make today's youth lose their sense of self and individuality. Stereotypically, suicide is a form of "expression." At least that's the stereotypical emo kid.

When I think of emo kids, I think of Adam and Andrew's song "Emo Kid"

"I'm an emo kid, non-conforming as can be, you'd be non-conforming too if you looked just like me. . ."

^Heh. I got a little chuckle out of that. Just wanted you to know. ^_^

Are you kidding?

The emos are disgusting. They don't wash their hair and they have no social skills. They lie down in the middle of the busiest hallway before school and make weird noises and laugh whenever anyone asks them to move out of the way. They SI and flaunt it so they can get attention, which is disgusting on so many levels.

"Emo" just means "I'm a socially inept loser with no real friends".

Your question should be "Do you tolerate emo kids?"

The answer to that is: yes. However, emo kids don't even respect themselves, so why should you bother to give them that respect?

I'm curious as to how many of you actually take the time to get to know these kids, or just go off of the HS stereotype.

I'm so sick of HS labels. If I went by them, let's see, I'd be a:

-Jock (I played Golf seriously for 3 years)
-Nerd (I maintain a minimum 3.7 GPA)
-Drama Kid
-Choir Nerd

I'd be 4 different people, all at once. You could even say I'm a prep, because my parents are upper-middle class. HS stereotypes are stupid and we need to stop labeling each other. It just makes it okay for other people to do the same.

^^^ I agree. You can't base your opinion on someone because of the way they look. There's a word for that- a stereotype. And you can't base your opinion on a group because of the people you know who fit that group, because there will always be an anomaly that you don't know about. Just because "emo" is a very specific stereotype doesn't make the label any less unfair. Yes, "emos" may be depressed or pretending to be depressed, but that alone does not determine whether or not you should respect a person. I'm sure if the title of this thread was switched with "asians" or "blacks" or "rednecks", there would be an uproar. There's nothing wrong with labeling a person as a prep because they wear preppy clothing or emo because they have black eyeliner, but when preconcieved notions come along with these physical labels, then there's a problem.

^It's kind of like how other races can make fun of white people all they want. But as soon as a white person says anything about another race, we're racist. I've always found that interesting.

In fact, I had someone tell me the other day, "You must be racist because you're white." And yet two of my closest friends are black. Just kind of interesting.

Sounds like what you would get if you asked Strom Thurmond, "Do you respect black people?"

I at least pretend to respect everybody. I don't respect some people on an individual basis.

This question is too general for me to answer. What defines someone as "emo"? And others have already mentioned that circumstances for those categorized as "emo" may be different. Others merely feel sorry for themselves, while some may actually have issues at home.

So no, I cannot answer this question without more specifics.
