I am not very religious, and I don’t practice Islam. But it is my religion and my parents. Do you think people would discriminate against me or do you think it would be considered as a plus(diversity)? I don’t know if I should put Islam down or prefer not to respond or no preference. Also, I am planning on writing my essay(first prompt) about life in Iran and the lack of freedom and liberty there. Does anyone think that’s a good topic? Thanks
Giving you a bump for having a good question.
The number of practicing Muslims in America in general seems to be on the rise, judging from the increasing number of women with the more traditional garb on college campuses. It might be a plus, but probably won’t make you a shoe-in anywhere if you weren’t already. Sounds like an interesting topic, it would make it clear that you’re a cough sane cough Muslim and not a radical.
If you live in Iran and/or that lack of freedom and liberty has directly affected you, then that is a good topic. Make it more about you than anything else – you’re the applicant, after all.

Quite annoying people have to make it clear they’re sane as soon as they put down that they’re Muslim. I think if you replaced the word Muslim with any other minority and the word sane with any other negative stereotype people would quite literally be up in arms over this thread.
Tbh I think at this point, Christians should have to demonstrate that they’re not like the Duggars, Kim Davis, or the Westboro Baptist Church. We have just as many examples of nutjobs as any other religious system.
If you don’t practice, what is the point of claiming it? It is a religion, not a race that you simply inherited it.
