I know my standardized test scores are mediocre compared to the average applicants to these universities (around the 20-40 percentile), but can my GPA make up for it? My essays and LORs will be pretty nice, as I'm confident that the two teachers I got to write my letters (social studies and biology) wrote really nice letters. I also have some nice hooks with a whole LOT of ECs and community service. So now that you know all this about me, what do you think?

I beg you- please look beyond my standardized test scores when chancing me

Thank you for your time I greatly appreciate it- WILL CHANCE BACK!

bump…

I think you have a good chance at Rice, Emory, and Vanderbilt.

I would focus on the schools that superscore the ACT and also on Duke, which considers only your highest subsection scores:

“For students who choose to submit the ACT with writing, Duke will consider the highest composite score and highest subscores on each section, regardless of test date, but will not recalculate the composite score. Students who take the ACT are not required to submit SAT or SAT Subject Test scores. Our school code for the ACT is 3088.”

You could try Oxford College at Emory University too. First two years at Oxford Campus, then everyone transfers to Emory in their junior year and graduates with the same diploma as those who went to Emory College as freshmen.

Also, have you taken 4 years of a foreign language?

umm no not 4 years- I took 2 years of spanish and 1 year of latin

why???

I feel your pain, I too have slightly low test scores but my grades and ECs are excellent… ugh… standardized testing haha

what r ur stats dude

bump…

come on…

your SATs are not stellar enough to compete with UPenn, but your background seems pretty impressive. You’re within the top 50, so you stand a fairly reasonable chance. Chance back please?

I think you basically have it covered here. Yes, your SATs are on the low end for a lot of these schools, but that’s the benefit of a holistic application. There isn’t an entire world of difference between a 2000 and 2100 or even 2200. I think that if your other factors, like essays and recs are above average, you still have a great shot. That, coupled with your hooks, makes you a competitive applicant. Of course, at schools like Brown and UPenn, it’s almost impossible to predict what will happen, but I like your chances at all of the other schools. Emory, Duke, Rice, and Vanderbilt are high matches because of their selectivity, but I think you have the best chances at Duke, Rice and Emory, of the 4. The SAT doesn’t matter as much as you think, especially at the most selective schools. I have classmates who got into Tulane and NYU with sub-2000 scores and great ECs, so you shouldn’t rule yourself out. Good luck! :)

And I don’t need a chance, but I would appreciate it if you could look over one of my essays :)

thanks for the boost of confidence man, even though Tulane and NYU aren’t really comparable to the likes of Duke, Rice, etc lol. Sure dude link me ur essay!

They’re a little off I guess lol, but the point is that SATs aren’t everything :)

bump!!!

Out of the 8 you listed, you will probably get into more than 2. Which ones I don’t know, but your work experience is very good and you are low income. They will realize that you had to get a job to just get by. I hope you emphasized this in your essays, because getting a 4.0 with all these EC’s AND jobs is very special. Your SAT will hurt you, but as others said a holistic approach will help you in this regard. You have good chances at these schools if your essays are also good.

Please chance me back

thanks for the chance dude I hope you’re right- honestly if I got into any of those schools besides Emory I would go insane lol

oh yeah and I got a 730 in Math I for SAT subject if that matters at all

From a grad of a top-10 university:
You have a good chance at all of these, and I wish you the best. One exception to each of those statements, however: to the first - Wharton is just plain tough; to the second - Vanderbilt & Emory are not on par with the other schools you listed (neither is Brown, really, but it is at least more selective). You may be waitlisted or denied at Vanderbilt & Emory because you are too good and they will expect you to go elsewhere, so if you hear from one of them first, don’t worry about the rest! Good luck!
