Assignment: Is the way something seems to be not always the same as it actually is?

While some people believe that observation always leads to the truth, the reality is that things are not always what the seem. In finding the truth, we must look beneath surface and leave all superficial observations aside. Literature, history, and cinema all provide examples that prove first impressions often deceive.

In the novel, Lord of the Flies, several boys are stranded on an island. One night, a dead parachuter falls onto the island and gets caught in the trees. Two boys look up to the parachuter, and in the darkness, perceive a beast. Because the wind was causing the parachute to move, the boys incorrectly thought it was a beast. This impression deceived the boys because of circumstance. Because it was nighttime, the boys were not capable of seeing properly. Furthermore, the boys were biased towards seeing a beast because other boys had already seen one. Later in the novel, a boy goes to the "beast" in search for the truth. In the daylight, he sees it for what it truly is, a parachuter. Leaving his prejudice aside, the boy was able to find the truth despite the first impression.

Many centuries ago, Persia went to war with Sparta. The Spartan Army had a mere 300 soldiers to fight the vast Persian Army of millions. At first, the Persians thought they would easily win against such a pitiful number, but soon the truth was revealed. The Spartans held the Persians to a stalemate for three days, proving their real strength. The Persians realized that they had misjudged the Spartan Army. The first impression had misled the Persians, and in order for the Persians to know the reality, they had to leave their first impression behind.

In a classic movie, two brothers find their father acting surreptitously. They notice he is having private conversations with a woman. They boys quicly assume that their father is having an affair. The brothers based this assumption on their first impression, so they were, in fact, wrong. After further observation, the boys learned that their father was meeting with a boss to discuss a promotion. The first impression tricked the boys into believing a fallacy, and not until they dug deeper did they learn the truth.

First impressions are very deceptive, and it is best to learn about someone or something properly before jumping to conclusions. Because they followed a first impression, the boys in the Lord of the Flies faced a problem. Similarly, the Persian Army and the two brothers were burdened because they trusted the first impression. Therefore, it is best never to judge a book by its cover.
