I purchased portable speakers for my kids for Christmas and I am blown away by the sound quality. The brand is G-Zip by G-Project. It can be used on multiple devices ( kindles, iPads, ) anything with a headphone jack. Best part is the price $19.99. They stock them at Target in multiple colors and Amazon . S will be using his for his boco audition this weekend. Will update his opinion.

The revival of this thread was very timely. Someone wrote the JBL came with a remote, so I had son run up to his room to find it. Amazingly, he did!

We got the JBL and I bought a used Ipod on Amazon from a reputable company.
It works great. D did not want to use phone worried that a call or text might
interupt while she was performing, but I do believe there is a way to make that
not happen… Maybe airplane mode?
So as of now we have a older version ipod with her music on it and putting music on
the iphone as well (but is is a 4) as back up

For all of those who have auditioned with recorded music (and thank you GSOMTMOM for your imput)… Is there typically
a table to set the device on? Are you standing near the table when you start? and
how much lag time would you suggest?

dreamatinydream - I didn’t even think of a call or text coming through. Thanks for the heads up!!!

well, I’m pretty neurotic and sometimes live in the world of WHAT IF?
Not healthy all the time!
I always have a back up plan. Drives D a little crazy, but it came in handy
a few times over the years at live theatre auditions and she now doesn’t say
anything hahaha. But, for those boys who have pockets, the remote will work
great and you dont have to worry about lag time. For the the girls with dresses
with no pockets- The remote seems useless - because what what would you do
with the remote?
But, I am beginning to think 5 sec lag time of the music would be safe…

I think it’s a great idea to bring your own speaker system. I would also preset the volume to where the music does not over power your voice in a room about 10’ x 15’. If possible have your vocal coach or someone you trust help you set the volume.

My D didn’t have lag time, but said it wasn’t a problem - she didn’t start singing immediately when music started. Make sure your child practices using it so they’re very comfortable with it!!! The other thing is to keep everything charged while at Unifieds. My D was hanging out with her friend waiting on friend’s audition and they realized her speaker had died. Thank goodness D’s was in our room charging - she came flying in the room, grabbed it & ran back just in time! Some rooms had speakers set up and she didn’t have to use her own, but not all.

Great point MTmom2017, make sure your child practices with it. At some point The D’s voice teacher used only the tracks during lessons.

And, yes, airplane mode is how to stop notifications from coming through. We had the music on two iPods and my cell phone…just in case. I also set up a playlist for each school. I’m glad that there are some accompanists in Chicago, but sad that not every school will have one. Techie stuff, I’m all over. Packing?! Not so much!

I know nothing about tech stuff, but my D said for CCPA (her only audition without an accompanist) she had her music on her Ipod and a CD. They provided a docking station/CD player with speakers.

She didn’t have a lag time but there was a little musical intro. The docking station was right next to her in the middle of the room so she just pushed play and started singing. Also, the two songs were together so she didn’t have to mess around with changing a CD or searching her IPod for the second song.

She auditioned at Roosevelt, not at unifieds.

She knew what they provided going in, so if there is any question, call the school and ask.

Recently found a Bluetooth Memorex portable speaker at TJ Maxx for $24.99. It has really great sound for the price… Holds a charge 8-10 hours. The nice thing is it folds (kind if like an eyeglass case) so no chance of damage toting it along. All the buttons & the actual speaker are inside. Cool find…
