Dodge College First Year Housing

I read on the housing page that the Dodge College Freshman will be housed on floors in North Morlan and Pralle Sodaro. Does anyone know how they are going to split them up? By specific major, or just randomly? I wonder why they didn't put them all together.

Hi Smother,

From our experience with my Freshman S last fall FFCs (freshman foundation courses) will play a big part in your Dorm assignments.

Please read this entire thread from last year to obtain an understanding of FFCs:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/chapman-university/1328733-dorms-roommates.html?highlight=freshman+dorms+chapman</a></p>

The housing assignments for freshmen certainly did seem kind of random this year. They claimed they would be by FFC, but in my D’s case, (freshman in film production), that just didn’t materialize, nor was she housed with others in Dodge. The claims that as a whole, most of the students she knows were not housed according to FFC, as others had so strongly claimed they would be. One thing too, she chose roommates who each had a different FFC (She is in a triple), and was told that roommate preference always trumps any sort of other living arrangement (for example, placing students in groups according to FFC, major, sport, etc.) One thing she did say is that, since the much anticipated “filmmakers village” fell through, there will be a “film dorm” next year, or more likely a floor of a dorm. This filled up pretty quickly, and I’m not sure whether that is exclusively for upper classmen (I suspect it is) and they plan to house the Dodge freshmen somewhere else.

In general, the system still seems to be in flux, with the university casting about what to do with Dodge students since there is no film village to work with. Others may have a different experience, with this, of course.

Hi Shakespearfan,

Thanks for sharing your D’s experience. It is very much appreciated. I agree with your observations that many roommates ended up not having the same FFC. They also used questionnaires to match up students personalities as part of the room assignment process. I have not seen anything on the web on what is planned for this year. The idea of the FFC is to get know well a group of maybe 100 fellow freshman with all different major & backgrounds by taking a “foundational college” class together with discussion and at parties in the dorm to solidify these relationships. Maybe some of the new fall freshman can call the housing office and let us know how assignments will be made this year.

“The Freshman Foundations Course (FFC) is the foundational portion of the Chapman General Education program. All entering freshmen enroll in an FFC section connected to a larger learning community and participate in an orientation program that includes a shared summer reading. The FFC course engages students in interdisciplinary, university-level critical inquiry and reflection. FFC courses focus more on critical engagement, exploration and communication related to complex issues than on mastering a body of material.” quotes from this website:

One needs to remember that Dodge College students make up at most only 15% of the Chapman U student body. What I have heard from my S and many others is that students want get to get know students from all majors at Chapman U for at least during their freshman & sophomore years. That Dodge students do not want to be isolated from the rest of the Chapman community (note: as you know Dodge College is located a couple of blocks away from the main campus). So rooming together with only Dodge students might be great for some Dodge students but not for the bulk of them from what I have heard. That is why many Dodge students join Fraternities & Sororities as well in order to have the complete college experience and not be isolated over at the film school. If the Filmmaker Village was built it would have been primary been filled by juniors, seniors & grad students attending Dodge in my opinion. I just wanted to add these thoughts to this subject that you brought up Shakespearfan. All the best.

Hi Smother,

I now understand your question after reviewing the revised Housing webpage:
<a href=“Page Not Found | Chapman University”>Page Not Found | Chapman University; Options

I see that they have a new freshman housing system this year. FFCs are no longer being used this years as in the past (including 2012) for dorm room Assignments.

The new system to start in 2013 is the Freshman Fenestra Residential Communities:

“All first year students are housed together in our residence halls. The word Fenestra means window in Latin and through Fenestra communities students will be able to take advantage of the many windows of opportunity that Chapman has to offer. The Fenestra communities are designed to support first year students’ successful transition into the college environment and the Chapman community. Most first year students who are living on campus will be assigned by academic content in one of our first year halls. These Fenestra communities benefit students because it allows for an improved learning experience and stronger connections between peers with similar academic interests.”

The dorm assignments (note: presently; subject to change) are as follows:

North Morlan Hall: Dodge and Wilkinson Social Science

Henley Hall: Education Studies, Performing Arts and Schmid Science & Technology

Glass Hall: Argyros Business & Economics and Wilkinson Humanities

Pralle-Sodaro Hall: Argyros Business & Economics and Dodge

Regarding your question Smother why all freshman Dodge students are not housed in the same dorm as discussed in by post above in order to get the complete college experience you do not want become isolated from the rest of Chapman U student body. There is a lot of collaboration between the majors at Chapman U. After all, your future spouse may be among these “other” majors or you may find a different major is more to your liking as the years past at Chapman!

Undeclared freshman majors will be housed at Henley Hall dorms.

Q: I am an incoming first year student and I want to live in ___________ hall. How is housing assigned?

A: In order to help first year students build community at Chapman, all first year students will be placed in on-campus housing according to academic content and we use a software system to match you with your roommates based on the living preference questions that are completed as part of the online housing application.

Q: Which residence hall is the best?

A: Most Chapman students would claim that the hall they are currently living in is the best!

Q: Can I request to live with a friend?

A: No, all first year students will be placed in on-campus housing according to academic content and we use a software system to match you with your roommates based on the living preference questions that are completed as part of the online housing application.

Students who continue to live on campus following their first year may select a preferred roommate through the Panther Housing Selection process during the spring semester.

Q: What if I don’t get along with my roommate(s)?

A: Each room will complete a Roommate Agreement at the beginning of the year to establish rules that all roommates agree upon. Review our roommate tips to help you get started on the right foot. If at any time the agreement is not being met, please contact your Resident Advisor who will help you make necessary adjustments.
