Does a merit offer come with the acceptance?

Hi,

My son got an email 2 days ago saying he was in, and then a big envelope with housing and other info came yesterday. There was no mention there of merit $$$. Based on his stats, I expected he would qualify for some $$ but he applied very late - right before the deadline - and he is out of state, so maybe he was too late and the merit money was already given out. Might he still get a merit letter, or would it have come with the acceptance?

What about learning about direct admit to Kelley? And Honors? Do those things come with the accepance or separately?

Thanks, everyone.

My daughter received her merit information in her acceptance letter. The Honors application (for scholarship) came about a month later. The honors program is automatic if you have SAT scores above 1350. The honor's scholarship would be awarded in April, I believe.

My daughter did apply in September, so she heard quickly.

Thanks, Pokey. I tried to get S to apply early to make various scholarship deadlines but he said he didn't want to go there. Then he got panicky, wondering if he'd get $$ at his first choice place, and applied. I was told they give $$ til it runs out, so maybe we missed it.

He doesn't really want to go there but a merit offer might be helpful in negogiating if we decide to try that....

Thanks from me, too, pokey318, though this is bad news for me, too. I applied in late November and was accepted on New Year's Eve by e-mail. The snail mail package included the honors invitation (though the scholarship app didn't come for another few weeks), but made no mention of other merit scholarships. I'm a little surprised, honestly, considering my record. What sorts of scholarships were awarded in the acceptance letter? And what were the stats of students receiving them?

I was mistaken on the timing of the letters and application date. I just looked at my daughter's folder.
Acceptance letter dated October 27.
IU Faculty Award dated November 18.
Honors College letter dated November 22 (included applicatioon to apply for Honors College Scholarship).

Ah! Thanks a lot.

Hmm, then I guess we could still hear. I think I will call them Monday and see what they say about the time frame for honors and merit invitations. Maybe it will take longer as I imagine they are busier now than they were in October.... Thanks again.

I was under the impression that most merit money goes to out of staters, based on what they said when I called in mid Jan. to ask if they were still giving out money. Are you guys Indiana residents? BTW, what they did say then was that if you apply by Feb. usually there is still $$ in the merit pot but by Mar. it is usually gone.... My S finally got his app to them in very late Jan....

My daughter is out of state. Her money will be freed up, as she has just withdrawn her acceptance. She was admitted to her EDII school. Maybe someone here will be able to receive her money. Wish we could take it with her as she will not be receiving any aid at her chosen school :-(

Called IU this morning. Was connected to a very helpful adult who told me he was an Admissions Assistant. When I asked if a merit offer would come with the acceptance, he said, yes, normally, but let's check.

He then asked if S had taken SAT1s - they only showed SAT2s in their computer. I said he had and that they should have the scores. He asked if he could call me back, which he did about 15 minutes later. He found the SAT1s, entered them and said he would refer S's file to the scholarship evaluation people. He also said that with S's scores, he should have gotten an auto-admit to Kelley Bus School, so he'd get in touch with them too.

He then left me a message later in the day, to say that the scholarship folks had called him back, that they would look at it, and if S was eligible for $$ they would send a letter by next week. He told me to call him back if I didn't hear.

I was amazed - for a state school, they sure were responsive. I am glad I called. I think that things often go awry in the whole process, at all schools, and that calling to check is always a good idea, as long as you have a valid reason and don't overdo it.

I just receieved notice that I have been granted an honors scholarship, if anyone was wondering about the date on that.

When did you submit the essay?

Last-minute, actually. (eep.)

when is last minute???....i sent the application around 10th Feb and havent even recieved acknowledgement of my application....did the notice come through email?

Last-minute as in, the day before it was due. Super-duper last-minute.

I received notification by mail. My best guess with yours is that they're probably still going through the selection process. Best of luck!
