Does accepting admission impact Merit?

My daughter qualifies for merit (we know this isn’t a guarantee) but like most, we need to wait until the end of Feb to see if she will get any. If she does, she is absolutely going to OSU. She’d like to accept now so that she is early in the pool for dorm assignment but wondered if she does accept, would they then reduce/not grant any merit? I mean, why give $ to someone who has already committed? Thoughts?

@simple0920, I don’t think it has any impact. My son was accepted in mid-November and we immediately sent in the acceptance fee. He received his scholarship notification in early January.

@simple0920 - is she accepted into Honors/Scholars, or planning on going for a Learning Community?

@bucks724 no, did not apply to any of those. She is hoping for the Buckeye (we are OOS) but wondered if by accepting, they would not consider her since she, well, she would already have accepted, so why offer money.

You may wait on others to chime in, but I don’t necessarily think that’s the case. If you feel it may disadvantage her merit aid, I’m sure there are others in the same boat waiting for other decisions on acceptance and aid who haven’t paid their acceptance fee as well. Congrats on acceptance! :slight_smile:

@simple0920, I should add that the scholarship amount my son received was the amount that he expected based on his GPA and SAT score and guestimated class ranking (his school does not rank), so not only did he still get a scholarship after sending his acceptance fee in, it did not appear to have been a reduced amount.

My now sophomore son accepted early and revived a full ride merit scholarship. He knew he wanted to go to OSU so he accepted without knowing his scholarship amount. They don’t just give the $$ to entice the student to accept OSU but also to keep quality students at OSU and for their retention.

She submitted her acceptance this morning. Thank you all !

I know you said she already accepted, but just thought I would throw my two cents in. My son is a freshman at OSU. He was accepted in the first wave last year in November. He accepted quite quickly. We are out of state as well and he received the National Buckeye that he qualified for – it’s such a great scholarship! Good luck!

@drjdillon thank you!!
