Does anybody know REALLY how much Mid-Year Reports affect admission?

My 1st semester grades are seriously becoming unstable and I'm really trying to get them on track. I might be receiving a B- or a C+ in AP Calc BC and I've never even gotten near those grades anywhere on my transcript (I got a 5 on the AB exam, lowest grade is a B+ in 2 or so classes).

I'm applying to the Ivies and I'm REALLY worried that this one grade (my AP Brit and physics are right now A-, so I'm hoping they won't slide to B's any time soon) will kill my chances if they see a C on my midyear report with a possible addition of another B

Has anyone talked to an adcom or admissions rep about this for the Ivies or high-level schools? If so, do you know how much they are weighing those grades or if a C will hurt my chances?

Sorry for the long post and thank you.

(And yes, I have read TokenAdult's thread on this. I just need someone to calm my nerves about THIS semester, not my general GPA)

I'm also really worried, I Failed my AP Biology exam! This has never happened to me before and I've been crying about it all day, also only 2 people in the whole class even passed the exam. I got a 62 (F) and so my first semester grade is an 83 (B-), before I had a 4.0 GPA, and straight A's, and although I got a B- in AP Bio this semester all my other semester grades are A's, (besides AP Bio I'm taking AP English, AP calculus AB, intro. to business, aerobics) I took dual credit govt. and economics over the summer and got A's. I also have an out period and student aide in case anyone thinks I have too few classes. My english teacher told me my GPA shouldn't go below 3.9 b/c of this, but I'm still really worried about it!!! I applied to Rice and Brown by the way. I'm pretty sure I won't get into Brown but with Rice I really thought I'd had a chance, is it gone now???

It's okay lol. I just realized I had made this thread more than a month ago. I can definitely relate though -- I just royally screwed up two of my finals and slipped from an A- to a B+. And I had the chance to raise up my calc grade to a regular B, but now 3 of my 6 classes have Bs and I just cried on my way home while talking to my friend. It's rainy here, the clouds are gloomy, and since it's finals week I had to walk home. By myself. On a cold rainy day.

I really don't want to have f***ed up my chances (excuse my language, but I really am depressed about this) because I really am a good kid and I KNOW I can do way better than this. If only someone could tell us what they look for in mid-year reports...

Seriously, hmf don't worry about it. It's only one B. I've screwed myself over with 3

Relax (to both of you). A C+ is something you should try to avoid for obvious reasons, and colleges will see it and probably not like it. But this kind of thing happens, and one lower grade is not the same thing as an overall decline from junior to senior year, which definitely is looked down upon. With such a competitive applicant pool to higher end colleges, it may indeed hurt you. But will it make or break your application? Probably not. You may have other very positive things that balance it out.

Either way, you already applied and you already got the grade. There's nothing you can do about it, so worrying doesn't make much sense, right?

^ Yep, I definitely have an "overall decline". Yay me. =[

The schools you apply to also look at your school's stats, so if you go to a really difficult school then maybe it'll be okay? They can know how difficult your school is by looking at all the AP's they offer and stuff as well to see how rigorous your schedule is in comparison with what the school offers. I'm saying all this b/c I don't know of any high school that offers AP Brit, so I'm thinking you must go to a difficult school?

If only 2 people passed, your teacher is not very good!!

You're right she's not, and she's stated on more than one occasion that she does NOT want to be teaching AP Biology because it's not her strong suit. I've always felt like asking her if you don't want to teach and know you're not good at it why teach it? I think she's just doing it because she's the only teacher at our school that's qualified. However, I think it would be more beneficial to students if there wasn't an AP Bio class at my school, as long as she's the one teaching it. In a way I'm really angry at her now that her lack of teaching skills has affected me, but OTOH she'd told my class quite a few times how she didn't want to teach it. Now, I'm mostly just angry at myself for taking the class anyway. I should have taken AP physics like everyone else.

It you don't have above a 4.7 GPA and aren't #1 in your class - forget the Ivys - go find the school that is right for you. You will drown if you can't maintain straight As in high school. Go to a school where the professors care about you, find the right fit!!!

^like MIT! (:

I'm gonna jump in this boat. I royally screwed up my midyear report... Yes, I should have studied more, but it was also a part of a weird grading system that some of my teachers decided to implement.

Does anyone have the answer to how much colleges actually look at midyear grades/count them??

In my Ap Biology class no student got an A first or second marking period.

Nobody that doesn't work in an admissions office knows REALLY how much anything affects admission.

can the midyear grade help me get into college?

first three years i combined with around a 3.2 took a bunch of honors and 4 ap;s in the 3 years senior year first semester i have a 3.8 with 3 ap classes is the big jump signifigant enough to get me into a school i may have not gotten into regularly?
