Does anyone know anything about the Grier School or Stoneleigh Burnham school?

Does anyone know anything about one or both of these schools?
Questions:
1. How much homework do you have per night?
2. How many dance classes can you take per week? (How many hours?)
3. How often do you have socials/get to hang out with boys?
4 What are the dorms like?
5. Hows the food? Healthy or not healthy? Large or small variety? What about vegetarian options?
6. Do they have a strict dress code? Do they have problems with short shorts, tank tops, etc?
7. Do you have a bathroom in your dorm or do you share one in the hall with other dorms on that floor?
8. Are you allowed to use laptops and cell phones during the academic day? Can you use them inbetween classes? After the academic day? (Late afternoon/night?) Or just on weekends?
9. Can you have a TV in your dorm?
10. How much free/relaxing time do you get?

THANKS =D

all i know is SB has horses. sorry, you probably already know that but I thought id help ur thread out.

I’m going to PM you.

Keep in mind, I attended SBS several years ago… policies may have changed…

How much homework do you have per night? 1-2 hours worth depending, you have study periods though, so you usually don’t have anything after school hours

How many dance classes can you take per week? (How many hours?)
Dunno… I didn’t dance there

How often do you have socials/get to hang out with boys?
Infrequently and very few people attend
4 What are the dorms like?
Small but clean and well lit

Hows the food? Healthy or not healthy? Large or small variety? What about vegetarian options?
There are plenty of vegetarian options…it’s healthy enough as long as you stay away from the waffle bar on weekends

Do they have a strict dress code? Do they have problems with short shorts, tank tops, etc?
Dress code isn’t strict, I think there is one day when you can’t where jeans or skirts and some days you can wear your uniform if you’re on a sports team.

Do you have a bathroom in your dorm or do you share one in the hall with other dorms on that floor?
I think a few rooms have bathrooms shared with roommates, senior hall is all shared.

Are you allowed to use laptops and cell phones during the academic day? Can you use them inbetween classes? After the academic day? (Late afternoon/night?) Or just on weekends?
There are time limits on the internet that are pretty severe.

Can you have a TV in your dorm?
Only if you’re an RA, there are TVs in the common room and dorm parents usually all watch prime time TV … although I was only there for senior year, so this might be different as an underclassman

How much free/relaxing time do you get?
Plenty

I graduated from SBS just a few years ago. I hope this helps!

How much homework do you have per night?

The amount of homework you have varies according to the classes you take. Stoneleigh-Burnham School has AP and honors classes available that will increase your homework load. On any given night you can expect to do between 30-45 minutes of homework for each class you take. There are daytime and evening study halls though so you have plenty of time to work on it!

How many dance classes can you take per week? (How many hours?)

If you want to you can dance five days a week for 2 hours a day. If you enroll in the pointe class you can dance for 3 hours a day. I was involved in our dance program for four years and it was wonderful!

How often do you have socials/get to hang out with boys?

Typically SBS tries to organize events with other single sex schools twice a month. Depending on the distance from SBS there may be more events offered some months than others.

4 What are the dorms like?

The dorms are located on the second floor of the main building. They are clean and comfortable. Every student is provided with a bed, dresser and desk. It is really nice not having to go outside to get to the dining hall…especially on weekends during the winter!

Hows the food? Healthy or not healthy? Large or small variety? What about vegetarian options?

The food is great. There are always vegetarian options along with homemade soups, salad bar, sandwiches, rice, pasta and a hot entree. On weekends there is brunch all morning with omelets to order and a waffle bar!

Do they have a strict dress code? Do they have problems with short shorts, tank tops, etc?

The dress code expects that you are neat and clean. No ripped or torn jeans, midriff baring shirts, spaghetti strap tank tops or revealing clothing during the academic day.

Do you have a bathroom in your dorm or do you share one in the hall with other dorms on that floor?

SBS has three hallways. 7/8 grade, 9/10 grade and 11/12 grade. Each hallway shares a common bathroom. At most, you will be sharing with 20 girls. In four years I never once waited for a shower.

Are you allowed to use laptops and cell phones during the academic day? Can you use them in between classes? After the academic day? (Late afternoon/night?) Or just on weekends?

Cell phones can be used during the academic day but only during a free period and only on the second floor. Laptops can be used during free periods. After the academic day you can us laptops/cell phones in your free time.

Can you have a TV in your dorm?

Unfortunately no…but there are common rooms on each hallway with a television and microwave along with some comfy couches!

How much free/relaxing time do you get?

On weekends, quite a bit. During the week SBS has a pretty structured schedule like every other boarding school.

My daughter looked at Grier & fell in love with it. It quickly jumped to the top of the list. She is only looking at All-Girls schools (as a boarder). If you have questions, I am happy to answer them. Please PM me.

grotonalum - not to hijack, but…
Did you look at Porter’s and/or Westover? What did you think? I, too, have a daughter who is only looking at single sex schools.

hey liddyb4, Somehow my D and I overlooked Westover & by the time we realized how interested she was, it was after Feb 1. So upsetting. We are visiting this week - already submitted a full app - & throwing our hat in the ring for a late acceptance (in the event that she is interested - which I am 99% sure she will be). On paper, Westover looks fantastic. I can’t wait to check it out. We didn’t apply to Ethel (legacy & still passed) ) or Emma (although I think Emma could have been a fab fit for me had I known about it back then!). As far as Miss Porter’s – I have never been a fan. It’s not something I can put my finger on. I know people who adored it, but I don’t think it would work for her. She is avg/OK in school, but a dedicated artist, an amazing person, and incredibly interesting. I think my Groton/HADES admissions experiences as teen made me overly worried about how high the bar would be for her. I have come to realize however that the all-girls prep admissions process is very different (in a wonderful way) and, although competitive & rigorous, their process is very gentle. I swear they gave us crazy tricky psych eval’s to fill out before some of the HADES interviews. It was intense.
Anyhow, back to Westover, please tell me all your thoughts/insight/experiences. I am dying to know anything.

To begin with, I love Westover. Not only will my daughter be utterly devastated if she does not get in, we will also. Though some kids may want a bigger school, the minute she stepped foot on campus it felt like home to her. Not too big, not too small. Strong focus on the arts. A gentle, but firm guiding hand for the new girls while they are learning to live away from home for the first time. More responsibility as they earn it.
My first child is a student at Exeter, and while it is a good fit for him, it would have been a total disaster for my daughter. I started searching for a school that I was not sure even existed for her as early as 7th grade. I assumed all schools were in the Exeter/Andover/SPS vein, because those were the kinds of schools that my son looked at 2 years ago. I was delighted to find that there are other places out there where my second child could be successful and happy.
I will say, Westover is a school that you must visit to get a real feel for. I loved it ‘on paper’ as you say from the start, but the visit solidified our feeling that this was the place our daughter would grow into young adulthood.

wow me and your daughter are just alike i fell in love with grier too and am determined to get in how old is your daughter im 12 im about to go into the 7th grade so im old enough to attend  to:grotonalum

hi ya do you like grier i would like to know bc im decided rather or not thats the right school for me

hi i would love to join grier school and the year is almost over so i was wondering how to get a scholarship there need help fast thnx bye

imanico45, if you like grier, go visit it, do an interview, and apply for rolling admissions. and about scholarships, if im not mistaken im pretty sure they only offer partial scholarships.
