That probably makes sense to bring a car to Tulane. The money for transportation to-and from Tulane by using Amtrak, bus or Planes can be used for garage money as mentioned above my Jym626.
Having a car in New Orleans is not necessary. There are plenty of ways to get around. The Tulane jitneys, streetcar, uber, bicycles, etc.
@Tulanefan101 It’s a 350 mile drive for us, so for my son’s SUV that comes out to maybe 35 gallons of gas, or $80-90. This doesn’t take into account wear and tear. The IRS mileage rate is 54 cents per mile, but just figuring it at 30 cents you come up with $210 round trip versus about $50 each way on the train. Of course, there is our time, effort, and expense to drive our son to the flag-stop train station, which is 60 miles. Convenience is worth something, sometimes quite a lot.
@DebmomNY I mostly agree with you. If there were a convenient, covered place to park it would be a no-brainer for us; he would just take the car and have it even if he didn’t need it very often. But with that not being the case, he can probably do without it most of his first semester. He will be a sophomore his second semester due to AP and dual enrollment credit, and I think that will allow him to have a car permit.
Resident freshmen are not granted parking permits. At the U where I work that means the entirety of your first year- it doesn’t go by credit it’s your resident status.
