Thank you dudedad, this just saved us $$$

Yes, very nice. Amtrak has done this for the past 10 years or so. They drop a lot of different specials throughout the year, so it pays to check their site when considering travel that's not too far out or off the beaten path.

Unfortunately, we priced Amtrak tickets for some different trips and even the two for one fare is often more expensive than flying.

Depends on the distances. Unfortunately, from here everywhere other than Portland is a multiple-day trip. Now, if we just had a Eurostar...

Once your child is accepted, be sure s/he signs up for Student Advantage to get an Amtrak discount all year long.

Remember that the new rule is that Amtrak passengers must book at least three days ahead of their departure date in order to secure discounts such as Student Advantage and AAA's, etc.

I didn't realize that was a new rule. I also didn't know that there is an AAA discount. Thanks.

The nice thing about Amtrak is that you can cancel or switch reservations with no fees.

Oh, how I wish we could use the train!!!!!

After studying for a PhD in train-schedule-reading, I have deduced that we are in a Can't Get There From Here situation with S's university: at least not without an overnight layover at a station that the Amway folks can't say whether it's even open at night.

With envy,
mafool

one of the things that kicked Ds school higher on the list was how easy it was to get back and forth on the train- particulary nice since Greyhound has cut bus service to many areas

as well as the campus visit deals ( and student advantage- which we have used since they were in high school) we also have local coupon books that include train tix
It is even cheaper to take the train at times, than drive- considering the price of gas.( and stress involved)
