I just had a quick question. I am a senior, currently enrolled in both Calculus AB and AP Statistics. I am aware that Cal Poly distributes bonus points to applicants who have 10 semesters of math. However, I recently read on a thread that statistics and finite classes do not count as bonus points for the MCA score. Is this true, and can I find any information from Cal Poly SLO that adresses this? Last year I decided that I would take AP Stats in order to fulfill the requirements needed to receive 500 bonus points, but after reading about this I am distraught. Thank you so much!
What you are referring to are rigor points. It’s CPs way of rewarding students who take the most rigorous options without having to manually read every application. Statistics and Finite are not considered rigorous options, so are not awarded bonus points.
With that said, if you followed the typical US math path (algebra, geometry, algebra II, pre-calculus, calculus) you’ll have all the bonus points you need. You’re allowed to include middle school math for rigor points. They just don’t figure into your GPA. Most students who are in AB or BC as seniors took algebra and possibly geometry in middle school.
@BlueTenor, that’s the key to long term academic success, enjoying classes as a knowledge quest rather than drudgery to simply get a grade. You’re ahead of the game. You’ll do well no matter where you go. Good luck!
