Does applying to 2 Claremont colleges lower your chances?

Hi,
I was talking to my friend's mom, who is an "admission's counselour" or whatever you call it, and I told her I am thinking of applying to both Pomona and CMC. She told me that if you apply to more than one, your chances of getting in are lower. Is that true? I think I probably would get into CMC, but I'm borderline Pomona, so I don't want to hurt my chances. Can anyone fill me in on this? Thanks!

The only time that I would imagine that it might hurt your chances is if you list on your application that you are applying to another Claremont. I go to Scripps and most people here applied to other Claremonts (me being the exception, I think...). There are people that go to CMC that applied to Pomona and Scripps and got into both, people that go to Scripps that applied Pomona, and Pitzer and got into all of them, etc. I really wouldn't worry about it, just be careful and make sure that every school you apply to knows you're very interested in them!

Thanks for the advice! Do you have to list what other schools you're applying to? And can you just list a few?

I think it's really your choice. I don't know what schools give that question (I don't think it's used on the common app) - I just know that it's an optional question on Scripps' own application.

My S was accepted to both Pomona and CMC. CMC offered more money and then Pomona matched their offer. It can be to your advantage to apply to both.

i definitely don't think the schools talk to each other about admissions. it won't hurt you to apply to both.

Alright, thanks so much for the advice. I'm glad it won't hurt my chances!

Just wanted to "echo" the above. I find it impossible to believe that applying to 1 or more of the Claremont schools could matter. They are separate schools (the consortium relationship aside) and certainly so as far as admissions. The consortium "connection" between the schools should be irrelevant as to this issue. My S applied to Claremont, Pomona and Pitzer with no ill effect. Best of luck to you.

Alright, thank you!!
