Does applying to multiple schools hurt chances?

I am applying to CMU RD and SCS is my first choice. I would say SCS is a reach for me and I think I have a much better chance at CIT. My question is: should I apply with SCS as my first choice and CIT as my second? Or will that just hurt my chances at CIT unnecessarily?

Thanks

I don’t think so. I’m applying to 3 of them haha you’re fine.

It definitely doesn’t hurt your chances. I thought the same thing when I applied last year (as a result, I only applied to CIT even though I was also interested in SCS). I think as long as you’re able to show demonstrated interest in both SCS and CIT you’ll be fine. Make sure that your essay addresses distinct reasons for being interested in both!

No, I don’t think it will hurt you at all. A lot of people apply to their wanted school & then to a safety as a back up, & then switch schools later on. It’s my understanding that your interest to join one school does not affect your admission/denial to join another school.
