In fact do any of the Ivies? I’d just like to have an accurate report because I’m realizing that schools don’t always list list ALL of their majors.
Thanks!

No communications or journalism major (I don’t think any ivy does, though I may be wrong. Brown tries not to validate pre-professional majors, because part of our philosophy is you’re better if you know how to learn/write/think, rather than if you’re given specific “job” training). But alumni that have made great careers in the media/broadcasting world include Ted Turner and Chris Berman. In fact, I’d challenge you to look at the people you most want to emulate (Chris Matthews? Stephen Colbert? etc…) and see what they got their degree in. I’d bet, for most the people who do well in broadcasting and journalism, it wasn’t communications or journalism.

That is correct, no communications or journalism major at Brown. However, there are a few journalism writing courses (through either English or Literary Arts), and some classes that analyze the media (there used to be one in poli sci, not sure if it’s still offered after the prof left). And film-making classes are offered in the Modern Culture and Media department, if you are interested in documentaries, for example.

Some people believe in a communications/journalism major, others agree with chsowlflax’s perspective. In the end, it’s all about your clips and experience, which you can get without a communications degree.

Penn’s College has an undergraduate comm major offered in collaboration with its Annenberg School of Communication.
Cornell has one too. Academics

Stephen Colbert??? i love him, but he’s a comedian! (sad to say that stewart/colbert are more trusted than most journalists…)

It’s funny, I’m the only high school student of Turner Broadcasting’s 150+ summer interns in Atlanta this year, but I didn’t even realize Ted Turner went to Brown…interesting…

Cornell has a communications program. Also, one of my friends is majoring in “interdisciplinary studies” (which with you take whatever classes you wish, outside of college distribution requirements) and is focusing on “journalism and french literature.” She is basically making her own major.

Modupe: Many people who actually work in that profession do not have Journalism or Communications degrees. Why not PoliSci or History or Econ or Psych or English or Chemistry? That field values experience outside of just the journalistic arts.
