Hey,

From the college website Bryn Mawr only offer need based aid, but some students in CC said they received merit base scholarship. Anybody has insight on this matter? If the college offer merit based aid, how much would it be?

Bryn Mawr College does offer some merit based scholarships, but not many - most scholarship funds are for need-based scholarships. How much merit any particular student might receive is dependent on each student, but it won’t be as much as other students generally offer.

There are some merit-based scholarships but they are awarded upon issuing acceptance letters. They’re relatively new - it wasn’t introduced until the year after I was admitted. The majority of aid is need-based. Bryn Mawr also participates in the Posse Foundation program which provides full tuition scholarships.

Also, from the Bryn Mawr website:

Students admitted to Bryn Mawr College as first-year, first-time students are automatically considered for the Bryn Mawr Merit Scholarship; no additional application is required. Applicants are evaluated using Bryn Mawr’s holistic admission review process, which takes numerous factors into account including but not limited to academic coursework and performance, involvement in school and community, leadership qualities, standardized test scores, letters of recommendation, quality and content of writing, and potential to contribute in meaningful ways to the Bryn Mawr community.

Students may receive a Bryn Mawr Merit Scholarship even with no demonstrated financial need. Merit scholarships may be awarded to U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and international students. In past years, awards have ranged from $8,000-$20,000 per year. Scholarships are awarded at the time of admission, and are renewable each year for up to four years as long as the student remains in good academic standing with the College.

Thanks Englishivy! Any clue how many merit awards were issued each year? MoHo and Smith have quite clear message for the profile of award receiver, but not Bryn Mawr.

According to Bryn Mawr’s 2012-2013 Common Data Set, 100 freshmen (out of a total of 365 freshmen) got merit awards in 2012, with an average award of $11,970. I would imagine these are mostly $10,000 and $15,000 awards, though some might be smaller.

My daughter, who will be attending BMC as a freshman this year, got a $15,000 merit award. It was a very positive factor influencing her decision to attend BMC–not the only factor, nor even the most important, but a very nice “plus.”

What were your daughter’s stats? I know that Bryn Mawr College doesn’t give as much merit, so they must have been impressive.

Hey! Sorry to hop on an old thread, but I was wondering how those of you who didn’t apply for financial aid found out about receiving merit scholarships?
