I have heard (or maybe read somewhere) that if you get anything lower than a C-, you will not be admitted and there are no exceptions. If you think this might apply to you, I would call the admissions office to confirm, and if necessary, make alternative college plans. As far as “maintaining the same GPA”, I don’t think you have to maintain the exact GPA or higher. That would just be too unreasonable. However, it does seem to give the admissions some wiggle room to rescind someone’s admission if they get straight Cs for example. I really wish they would just spell out exactly what you need, like the UCs do. If your GPA can’t slip a bit, my son is already out, as his GPA is not quite as high as it was after his junior year, but it is still very respectable.

Had he gotten a D his unweighted GPA would have been 2.0 and he would he would have been admitted. I can’t say that that would be the true in every case but it was in this one. Maybe because his load was so heavy. He took 6 AP classes his senior year got 1 B, 4 Cs and an F. He also got 3 or better on every AP test. What I find unfair is that some high schools will bump your grade if you pass the AP test 3=C, 4=B and 5=A, but not this high school. I know my son’s friend got a 5 on the BC Calc AP test, but a C in the class.

I still think any D takes you out. I would call admissions to verify.

Alright, so I get to panic again. I got a call from admissions about credits for Sign Language, which should not really be a problem, just a matter of getting college transcripts sent. The real problem is that when I applied, my AVID coordinator specifically told me that I did not have to report a D that I got second semester of English 1 because I was making it up last semester. Now, the admissions person told me that because I didn’t report that D, my app is getting a second review with my partial transcript from this year. FYI, I retook the second semester of English 1 and got an A, which is on my transcript that I submitted. I got straight A’s last semester, as well. Should I be worrying?

This is ridiculous. >.<

I think because you retook it and got an A, you should be fine. I thought you were talking about a D your senior year. The A should replace the D, but I really do not know. Best of luck to you.

That’s what I figured, but I guess I’m going to have my AVID teacher call in with me so it can get cleared up. They probably think I’m some shady kid trying to hide grades now. >.<

What if you got admitted with all B+'s(3.3) and then you got all A’s but 1 F which makes it a 3.5. You not only maintained your grades but you improved them. Would they still rescind you?

You’re supposed to not get any grades below a C. I haven’t heard of anyone being rescinded but I would say don’t let yourself be in that position… They have two main guidelines for you once you are admitted; you must keep your grades above a C and that your grades don’t drop drastically…
Good Luck!

That was just a hypothetical. For those schools with the generic
“We expect you to keep your performance at the same level as when we accepted you”
you could probably get away with an F as long as your other grades improved.

Yeah, I’m not sure… But it is a pretty good academic school so i’m assuming that it is a possibility to be rescinded…

They absolutely rescind. My son’s friend from high school was rescinded for an F in AP Spanish Lit. even though he got a 3 on the AP test.

they have lax in cali? I’m from MD so…ya didn’t know they did that here. I might have to bring my stick then lol…may be a bit rusty though.

what if i got accepted with a 2.84 gpa. and i’m getting almost all c’s but i have a c in ap gov and b in languages.

My friend’s S was rescinded for a D in math the last quarter of senior year.

OK, here’s the deal.

Cal Poly uses a numeric formula for admissions. GPA gives so many points on a scale, SAT/ACT scores so many points on a scale, etc. There are bonus points for x number of semesters of Math, Science, etc. taken and proposed. For each College (Architecture, Business, Engineering, etc., there is a different cutoff line for points needed for admission. Finally, there are absolute admissions requirements for number of years of English, Math, etc. completed and proposed.

So, when a course listed on the Application is not passed, that affects four things: 1) the number of courses completed in that subject area, and therefore the bonus points, 2) possibly affects the minimum number of courses required for general admission in a each college prep subject area, 3) for a particular declared major, would that course not passed have weakened the application for that particular Major, and 4) demonstrates a significant decrease in GPA as compared to GPA when the Application was submitted.

So, the Application needs to be re-computed by Admissions to make sure that 1), 2) and 3) above are accurate as to # of points in general, and in the Major subject matter, and whether that number of points would have earned admission in the first place, and then 4) is a judgment call. As to 4), sometimes a D is acceptable, sometimes not depending on its effect on the 4 areas above. An F is almost always reason for rescission.
