Does Dartmouth Make Exceptions?

My scores are not phenomenal, but I believe my passion for music is. Is Dartmouth the type of school that will take EVERYTHING into account--might they overlook okay scores for stellar EC's? I have heard that Dartmouth is truly holistic. Is this really true?

Interesting question. Is any school with such high averages truly holistic?

Looking at our school’s Naviance, Dartmouth appears to like high scores more than most.

However, I think that if your passion for, and accomplishments in music set you apart, and your scores are above the 25th percentile, you would remain in the running.

My scores are above the 25th percentile. That makes me a little hopeful, but I’m still curious on the holistic thing. I’ve heard that your scores are just a barrier, something that gets you in the running–everything else is what gets you accepted. Is this true at Dartmouth?

I think that is somewhat true. If you look at the results thread, there are some students with sub-2200 SAT’s that were admitted but more with scores about that point. So there definitely are some kids that got in based off of an essay and recommendations, but scores definitely help.

If you haven’t looked at this, you might want to. I found it pretty interesting and I haven’t seen too many schools put up date like this.
[Testing Statistics](http://www.dartmouth.edu/admissions/facts/test-stats.html)

Yeah I’ve looked at the testing statistics. I love how their data is so easily accessible, unlike some other schools I’ve seen.

Do you guys know how much more (or less) Dartmouth weighs subject test score compared to SAT scores?

When DS’s counselor laid it out for us, what we understood is that Dartmouth, as the smallest ivy, has a higher percent of hooked students just to field teams. Half of the class is athletes, legacies and minorities. They will account for most of the below median scores.

I think the holistic part of the review kicks in once you have the rank and scores they want.

Mastablasta, get the Hernandez books, she explains the whole formula that yields the AI.

“My scores are not phenomenal, but I believe my passion for music is.”

It’s not how much you believe but how good you actually are as measured by outsiders. Are you a conservatory level performer/composer/vocalist? That would be of interest to DMouth. Otherwise, you can look around you and probably see many other dedicated musicians. Why are you different than those?

At Dartmouth, I can guarantee you there are tons of dedicated musicians who also have the stellar GPA & scores. What are fewer are the truly pre-professional types. Are you one of those?

@T26E4:
I consider myself a conservatory level musician. I regularly perform in orchestra hall, and I’m planning on pursuing a music major in college. My main essay talked about music, as did my peer rec, and I sent in 2 professionally made recordings, a repertoire list, a solid recommendation, and a resume. I didn’t send in anything else as I thought it might be overload, but I hope that what I did send gives the admissions officers a thorough glimpse of my musical career thus far.

Just be yourself and do your best. If you get in, you’ve answered your question. If you don’t and you believe that you’ve done your best, you’ve still answered your question.
Good luck and let us know :)

I think that Dartmouth does make exceptions. In my naviance, Dartmouth actually has one of the lowest scores GPA and SAT wise. As I have sub-par scores that are still within the median 50%, my hope is that they make an exception for the both of us.

@T26E4: Are you saying that D doesn’t have many people who want to go pre-med or pre-law and so they search out for those people? or did you just mean going pro with eagertolearn’s music career?

IN my info session, I was told scores are the last thing they look at. I was also told by someone who works at D that they actually hired more people to read this year to be sure everyone got the 2 reads. I really do believe they are holistic and that the stats fall from that. I also believe they have to wheel and deal at the end to make their goal numbers b/c sadly, US News and now FOrbes has put them ALL in that position.

There are not "pre-med’ or “pre-law” majors at Dartmouth. However the school graduates a number of students who who go on to med/law school

^^
Thanks guys! I’m hoping. Good luck to you all!

Well be yourself and show your passion and how much u can reach with this!I am sure that u will be ok!!
