i'm seeing lots of opinions on this and wondered if there's data behind it...if a student is deferred, is that student more, less, or (meaningless % difference) to eventually be admitted?

My gut feeling (based on no science) is that a person put off once would not feel as appealing on a 2nd viewing as a new person would be...but i could be 100% off on this.

My gut says that there is not difference. They must be just mixing the differed applications with the dr application pool. Though I have not read anywhere that this is dibs this way or differently. I feel this is the most logical thing to do.

I think it’s unknowable. It depends on the no. of quality apps obtained in the RD round. Any given year, that new pool may capture more of the attn of the committee than others. And vice versa.

It also varies from school to school. Some schools admit their early deferral applicants at a very low rate, others at about the same rate as in the RD round.

Some apps are deferred only because the adcoms want to see fall grades or new test scores, and improvement is needed before admission is a possibility.

This is one of those cases where a GC with good contacts can make an inquiry and find out the cause of the deferral. Sometimes this results in nothing, but in other cases, it can tell you if you have a chance or what you need to get you into the accept pile. It’s worth asking your GC about, particularly if you have a good one.

Do NOT try and do this on your own, however. That will only make the adcoms mad.
