Does disciplinary probation have any long-term impacts?

I got caught smoking weed (first offense) and was given disciplinary probation. I’m okay with the punishment itself, but is this sanction going to have any impact on me in the long run (i.e. employers, other opportunities)? If so, how much? I want to go into either investment banking or management consulting. I’m also considering law school a little bit. Thanks for any input!

Could you clarify if you are in high school or already at Duke? Do you know if this will be on your transcript? That is the important question…

Sorry for not including that. I’m already at Duke and no this isn’t going on my transcript but it is listed on my disciplinary record until 8 years after my matriculation.

This from the Duke website:
“Disciplinary Probation
A status imposed on a student for a specific period of time during which another violation of university policy or violation of any of the conditions of the probation shall result in an augmented disciplinary action, including the possibility of suspension. Disciplinary probation restricts a student’s ability to study away from Duke through the Global Education Office for Undergraduates, participate in DukeEngage, and be released early from the three-year residency requirement. It also may impact other opportunities in which a student’s disciplinary record is considered as a criterion for participation.”

During your time at Duke, it looks like this will have consequences that limit your opportunities. In the long run, you will have to report this on your graduate and professional school applications. The impact of that depends on how you spend the remainder of your undergraduate experience.

Graduates schools only care about your transcript. I doubt that disciplinary issues are on the transcript. Check with the dean of students to see what if anything is disclosed.

You’ll be fine.
