Does disciplinary record has a huge impact to transfer

I am a international student who is seeking transfer for my sophomore year. now the university i study is a top60 public school. However, i made a dumb mistake last week that i smoked near the dorm and caught by the RA then i have a conversation with my hall director. he told me that my case is really lower-class but he still give me a reprimand which will not affect my transcript or college report but it will exist in my record. i just wonder will the reprimand destroy all my chance to apply umich, unc, brandies, and sort of school? What should i explain in the common app section which is about the violation? thanks

@Hanna

I actually have a similar situation from high-school. I was caught drinking on campus once. Basically, what I’ve been told is that I shouldn’t worry too much about a one time incident. I basically just wrote that I know it was dumb and that I can’t change it, but take responsibility.

I hope someone else can give more feedback to this topic.

Thanks Vincent1997. I read your thread and seems you plan to transfer too. I actually emailed part of my target schools like Rochester, Brandies, and so on. most of them said that reprimand will not impact my application review in a negative manner. However, I still freaking worry about it.

There are dumb mistakes and serious ones. Adcoms know the differrnce. There is (or was) a line on the firsr school’s paperwork about ‘was he in good standing?’ Sounds like you were assured by your current college.

According to my school (big public school in Great Lake area), the transcript provides verification of good standing and eligibility to return. However, reprimand will not show in my transcript does it mean I still in good standing?

anyway, thank u for answering

hope someone else can give more feedback to this topic.

I never knew smoking in non-smoking areas would have such a negative impact on your record? 0.0 Wow. I thought at worst someone would just tell you to to stop doing it or give you a fine.

Are you sure that your university even reported this to your transfer colleges? This reprimand may not be anywhere on your record. You might be alerting your transfer colleges to something that they do not even know about. Find out from the registrar if that is reported with your transcript or how it would be reported.

… I smoked beside the backdoor of my dorm.

It will in my disciplinary record but not transcript and I need to report in the common app. I did email some target colleges and they said I should report that incident but I don’t need to worry about it. However, I still freaking worry about the impact which might bring by that reprimand.

I wanna renew some personal information: Redesign Sat: 1440 (650+790), English proficiency:Waive First semester GPA(college): 4.0 Oversea high school GPA: (95/100). 4AP Calculus BC 5 Physics 1 4 Micro/Macro economic 5

As @lookingforward states, ADCOMs know the difference between stupid mistakes and serious offenses. Remember, you won’t be the first (or last) applicant to have a small smear on your application.

And, on the subject of actually reporting the incident on your Common App–you definitely should. What’s worse, a student openly reporting a small disciplinary infraction, or the colleges having to find out about this small disciplinary infraction from somewhere else?

@TransferStalker Thanks for answering. I knew that honest is the best policy and promise I will not lie or hide anything in the application. I just wonder how should I explain in the Common app or should I mention this incident in the interview initiatively.

Are we talking about smoking a cigarette containing tobacco or marijuana?

There is no way an infraction for smoking a cigarette is going to derail your application. Frankly, I don’t think smoking pot would jeopardize your application either, but definitely not tobacco.

@ClassicRockerDad Just normal tobacco. the marijuana is concluded in a special title called “drug and alcohol” in our school. The sanction for marijuana and alcohol will as least cause a probation I believe.

I hope someone else can give more feedback to this topic.

I’ll be straight up with you: it’s not clear how admissions officers will react to this. But, in your case, I’m pretty sure it’ll be overlooked.

Sorry that a more concrete answer can’t be given, but that’s the nature of college admissions.

Best of luck!

@TransferStalker Thanks! I hope so too.
