Does engineering typically take 5 years to graduate?

I heard a friend mentioned it. The website shows 4 years schedule though (for ME).

It might show 4 years, but if you come in with no AP or transfer credits it is difficult to keep up with all those classes, since schedules are harder than most people want to take. If you have some credits it’s easier.

UW has data on graduation times for engineering:
https://apir.wisc.edu/datadigest.htm
See graph on page 104 (which is the 115th page in Reader)

The average time is about 4.5 years. I’m not sure if that means the average is 9 semesters though. If they mean 4.5 years from September then the average is March of their 5th year, so 9.5 semesters. Some people get out in 4, some take 4.5 or 5. If you study abroad, it usually adds time. If you take a co-op, that adds a semester, but you got paid to work that semester so it’s a good thing to take one.

Also, Chemical Engineering has a required summer lab class, so that would make everybody take a little over 4 years in that major.
