Does Everyone Get This Letter?

yall, don't be discouraged if you did not get a LIKELY LETTER.....I remember last year i was like kinda bombed out because i didn't get one.....but really,,,it doesn't matter....you guys will all find out at the same time...on the night of the 30th of january......

I think that the letters are sent out to try and SNAG the "cream of the crop" before they find out from other schools whether they got in or not.....but ultimately who knows

GET EXCITED!
Chapel Thrill

I got a letter! It made me very happy. :)

SAT: 1550/2310
W/GPA: 4.8 or something

nlt51, im from tennessee so that definitely makes it easier for me, even though it's probably 12 to 14 hours by car. 6000 miles is definitely alot tougher, and im sure they'd be understanding! and huge congratulations to you too, and good luck with everything!!

like mdakota1 said, don't be discouraged if you don't get a likely letter, I never got one and I'm a sophmore at carolina now so its really no big deal. But congrats to all who did get one.

i also was extremely bummed that i didn't get a likely letter, but got in eventually anyways.

and from my recollection, they also send likely letters to a lot of top in-state applicants, to keep them coming to unc.

also, as far as the honors program goes, it is pretty much open to everyone, even if you're not "in the honors program." it's not really a testament as to how good a student you are, necessarily. i know some top students, moreheads and roberston scholars, that didn't get invited into the honors program. but you can still take honors classes and apply to be in it later on, if you want.

hi there,
if u applied early action.. did u find out on january 31st or any earlier? i am dying to know. thanks
-kwilks

when did you son/daughter hear from unc early action?

I'm pretty sure my son got his acceptance via snail mail one day prior to the "published" date of Jan. 31. I can't remember when the online notification went up. Assume it was at least the same day.

lu388-
You applied to Stanford and UNC EA? I thought Stanford was single choice...

Also, does anyone know the differences between the scholarships offered to EA people vs RD people? I didn't apply early b/c for 4 weeks prior to the EA deadline I was working on my school's HC float which was about 25 hrs/week and I didn't think with that type of commitment I'd be able to send off the best app possible by the deadline. I really like UNC though and would love to be in the honors program or receive a scholarship.

yep, stanford has SCEA, but since UNC is a public university and has early action with notification after January 1st, I was allowed to apply

jack, yes my daughter is at U.Chicago, and absolutely loves it! I do visit some of her other acceptance sites occassionally.
I do recall that students in the Honors Program were limited to 2 Honors classes per semester. We know a few students who attend UNC and take 1 Honors class each semester, even though not in the program. Probably not their first choice of Honors classes.

Most students I know take one or two Honors classes. One of my good guy friends took two Honors classes this semester. It's certainly doable, but if you want sanity and balance in your life (especially entering as a freshman) then I suggest taking one and seeing how your first semester works out.

SoccerGrl: I believe the only scholarship where you have to apply EA is the Morehead, but then again, schools nominate you for that. And if you go to a school OOS that is not one that can nominate students for that, then you could possibly be nominated at UNC, but it's pretty rare. In that case, I don't think EA makes any difference.

Chocoholic: Glad to hear your daughter is enjoying UChicago. How's she handling the weather, or has it not gotten that cold yet? :)

Regarding the honors classes, those in the honors program can pre-register for 2 honors classes (per semester) and can register for more than that during regular registration if they want. They are not limited to two per semester, though I doubt many take more than 2 a semester. My daughter took 2 honors classes this semester, as a freshman, and had no problem at all. She's involved in other activities on campus as well. If you followed a rigorous high school curriculum, I don't think you'll find it extraordinarily tough to take 2 a semester. That was her feeling, at least. She seemed to have no problem.

I'm not sure how or why UNC chose certain people to get this letter. There are 5 people from my class (in state) who applied and I'm the only kid who got a letter. Three of the others have a higher class rank than me, but my SATs are 100-200 points higher than theirs'. I can only guess that they're looking more closely at SATs than class rank/GPA. Then again, maybe they just picked random applicants and this letter doesn't mean crap.

I asked a UNC senior if he got a letter like this and he said no, but he applied for regular admission. I don't know if that makes a difference. He also mentioned that the honors program is insanely hard to get into. He applied 3 times and never got accepted (he'll be a med student next year).

Good luck to everyone!

lu388--did you get accepted to Stanford?

I'm an in-state student and also received the 12-14 letter. However, I didn't get the merit scholarship letter :( I'm curious as to how many in-state students have received the letter and if so, when did you get it?

Kinda disappointed,

D

You'll hear sometime between now and April I believe. It's very hard to get a merit scholarship, though.
