This is not some uniquely British thing. As F Scott Fitzgerald put it:
“Let me tell you about the very rich. They are different from you and me. They possess and enjoy early, and it does something to them, makes them soft where we are hard, and cynical where we are trustful, in a way that, unless you were born rich, it is very difficult to understand. They think, deep in their hearts, that they are better than we are because we had to discover the compensations and refuges of life for ourselves. Even when they enter deep into our world or sink below us, they still think that they are better than we
are. They are different.“
It’s not just, as Hemingway put it, that “they have more money”
To me, their response was as neutral as humanly possible. They were asked a question and said yes, nothing more, nothing less.
“We can confirm The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been requested to vacate their residence at Frogmore Cottage”
Not sure how that says “look at me”.
It’s not on the them to make it appear like no big deal if it wasn’t their idea and not something they wanted, and perhaps they don’t feel the need to lie to make Charles not look like a jerk.
Why do the housing repertoires of the King and future King matter with regard to H&M? They are not living in England nor are they working on behalf of the monarchy, their situation doesn’t compare to the King and future King in the slightest so why does it matter how many homes those two have compared to H&M? For all we know, Eugenie may have asked H&M not to renew thee lease so that the property would be an alternative for her parents, whom will find the upkeep of the Royal Lodge difficult with Andrew’s new ‘non-working royal’ paycut and Frogmore allows them to stay in Windsor. We also do not know that this is not part of a master reshuffling plan that then gives them a bigger space they would prefer. If that is the case, I sure hope that story gets shared with a recipe for crow flavored tea perhaps.
It’s not income, it’s not owned property. What is there to tax? Any money he gets from Charles is a gift, and not taxable (Charles doesn’t get a tax deduction in the US, but he doesn’t need one).
My feelings about the house is it was something that wasn’t meant to be a “I’m kicking them out” scenario. I believe it more has to do with more benign logistics as someone mentioned above…perhaps a discussuin with Eugenie, etc.
I highly doubt Charles, 2 months before his coronation, is out to stir the pot or be the cause of any more bad press right. He would have done that after.
Perhaps you include me in your designation of “people who use the word, ‘hate’ far too easily”. I can promise you I do not.
Meghan is simply not likable. She/they want to make it about race, or a difference of opinion on royal duties, or whatever. But things would be very different for Harry if she weren’t such a troublemaker.
Many who are commenting here would not surprise me if they are regular contributors to the Daily Mail/Piers Morgan/Jeremy Clarkson hate fest comments section. Credible death threats have been confirmed and full time security will be needed for Harry and his family for the rest of their lives.
Having lived in Britain, I’m aware that sadly most of the older generation have been well and truly brainwashed in their admiration of the monarchy and vicious in their condemnation of anyone they perceive as a threat, particularly if they’re an American woman who has had a successful career and is mixed race. Racism is and continues to be the main problem with the hate directed at Meghan Markle. People actually side with her despicable father and sister in their attempts to destroy her life, but no racism to see here, no siree!
If posters want to believe the stuff written daily in the tabloids about this couple, I can’t help them. Most commentators haven’t bothered to read Spare and haven’t watched the documentary. If you get a chance though, do google “Prince William Valentine’s Day”. Somehow the palace just can’t seem to totally squash that story, which has been around since 2019.
I’m sure there can’t be any truth in it, though I do wonder why it never gets mentioned here.
Have their been death threats against any of the other royals? I suspect they don’t make them public. There are plenty of people who don’t like Andrew, never liked Fergie, called their children ugly and fat. That family didn’t respond or keep bringing it up, just went on.
I’ll say again I don’t hate M&H, just don’t find them that genuine. I wish they’d have a sense of humor about some of it. Their choice as to which things, but I know I’d think they were better sports if they made fun of avocado toast or holding hands or even the things they brought up themselves in the book. Harry did a little of it with Stephen Colbert and he came off as real, and kind of funny.
You think everyone who disagrees with you is racist? Seriously? I formed my opinion of the couple in the Oprah interview, in which I found them whiney and narcissistic. They have personally provided plenty of ammunition for their detractors, all questions of race aside.
Issues of marital fidelity I leave to the couple in question to work out-not my business. On the other hand, publishing texts from family members without their consent I find despicable.
Either the press used the work “evicted” to inflame or maybe the UK uses the word “evicted” slightly differently that the US?? I think of “evicted” as against someone’s will. Maybe for the UK, it is “the lease is up”.
Could it possibly have been as simple as "ok, M&H don’t want to renew, so Frogmore is not occupied, let’s move Andrew there "? (Probably not )
Privacy - while H may have never said “we want privacy”, he has complained about paparazzi and that he doesn’t want happened to his mother to happen to his family - which sounds like he wants privacy. (But yet continues to call attention to himself and family.)
Apology - someone mentioned upstream that the family seemed dysfunctional long before M. Agree and I think we have read, seen, heard that for that decades. If H knows how the Firm works (and he has complained about that), he should know he will never get an apology. Yet, on a son/dad/family-level, I can understand how he wants one. Many, many people want that deathbed “I love you/I am sorry/I wish I had done X” declaration from a parent…but don’t get it.
Anyone know if H is seeing a therapist? I find it hard to believe a therapist would recommend complaining about the family on Oprah or writing a book about it to someone who is trying to still be a part of the family.
I still like H&M and think being part of the royal family would incredibly difficult (especially for someone not born into it), but do think H is being unrealistic.
They statement made it look like it was the palace’s idea, but H&M decided not to renew so they could have said “We can confirm The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been requested to vacate their resident at Frogmore Cottage because their lease was up and they decided not renewed it”.
In the real world (maybe not the royal world), not renewing a lease means you are leaving the property (and you don’t get to leave your stuff there or stay there on ocassion).
Or one can believe the alternative narrative - this was set in motion by Charlie back in January with the release of Spare and the interview circuit. Charles was upset by Camilla being portrayed as a media hound - desperate to be liked after years of derision.
