I'm at a community college now. I have two more semesters left. Last semester, I was put on financial aid suspension for not completing my degree program as promised in an appeal I wrote to the school after I was placed on financial aid suspenion(2 years ago). I was placed on it for dropping classes. Now, I plan on paying for my classes out of pocket until I complete my AA, which is December of 2011. I plan on transferring to a 4 year university after.

The question I have is: Will my financial aid suspension transer to the 4 year university? Can I re apply for financial aid once I transfer?

Every school has to have a SAP (satisfactory academic progress) policy for determining eligibility for financial aid. It usually includes a minimum GPA requirement, a minimum successful completion of a % of all classes attempted (this would include all classes taken anywhere and would include Ws), and a maximum number of credits for the degree you are pursuing. These will vary by school but an example (my daughters school) is a 2.0 GPA, 75% of all attempted classes successfully completed, and a maximum attempted credits of 150% of the credits a degree requires (so if a degree requires 120 credits a max of 180 credits).

So you can apply for aid at your new school, but you will need to meet their SAP policy. They will probably have appeals processes in place.

Can’t you re qualify for aid at your current school if you meet SAP? Or are you to far off from SAP to be able to do so? If you are well off meting their SAP requirement, you may have problems at the new school also.

FYI, whether you have paid for classes out of pocket or with FA is not taken into account for meeting SAP. My son was initially denied aid when he returned to school even though he had never applied for aid before. He appealed and the appeal was granted but would have lost it again, as you did, if he had not continued to meet all the requirements. If you have 2 semesters left at your current school it is very important that you try and bring your record up to where you will meet SAP at your new school if you want to be eligible for FA.

No, as long as you stay in school at least half time the loan will not go into repayment. Once you drop below half time you have a 6 month grace period (for Stafford loans) before the loan goes into repayment.

I got a loan for fall 2009 and spring 2010. I did not attend school this fall because of financial aid suspension. I plan on going out of pocket for spring 2011.

I hope I did not fall under repayment period.

You are probably in repayment now. If your spring semester ended May then 6 months from the last day of the semester (or day you dropped below 1/2 time if that was before the end of the semester) would be sometime in November when your loans will be in repayment. You should have received notification. You need to check into this ASAP and make any required payments on time. Loans can be put back into deferment when you start back at school at least half time - but if they are in default I believe you may not be able to put them back into deferment. Also I believe you have now used up your grace period for these loans so once you drop below 1/2 time in the future they will be immediately repayable.
