Hi. High school senior applying to Georgetown SFS. I was raised a catholic, but currently am an atheist. Does Georgetown favor catholics, moreso than non-religious people, in their applicaiton process? Would I my application be considered differently, in any light?

No. If accepted EA, you'll get a slightly different Christmas card, but that's about it.

Does anyone know about the other, more 'hard-core' jesuit schools like Fordham or BC? I mean, I know it's no substitute for good grades and high scores, I was just curious.

Would being an atheist be a plus? Demographics wise? I mean, it would diversify Georgetown's over 50% catholic body...

I didn't know you even put religion down on an application?

I don't know if they favor Catholics or not, but I remember when I was at a BC information session, the admissions officer did say that BC favored kids who came from Jesuit schools.

They accept more kids from Jesuit schools but that doesn't necessarily mean they are all Catholics.

I dont think its so much about catholics as it is about catholic high schools. I go to a Catholic high school(btw im protestant, not catholic) and we have a lot of kids who have lower grades, ecs, and test scores than a lot of the kids who get rejected here on CC but still get into Georgetown, BC, and ND

I think this is due to quotas they have for Jesuit schools, which is understandable, being funded by the Catholic Church and what not.

I'm pretty sure that Georgetown is not funded by the Catholic Church.

Simple answer: no. It might look like Catholics make up more of the student body, but I believe that's because Catholic students are somewhat more drawn to Georgetown over other similar schools, not a result of favoritism.

I'm a staunch declared atheist and I go over like gang busters. My theology professor and I used to have coffee and chit chat together.

Sorry I was wrong about being funded by the Catholic Church, but the Church can revoke Georgetown's Jesuit status, something the school is very proud of.

Jesuit isn't a label or status that is given out by the Catholic Church. When they say Georgetown is a Jesuit school, that means that it is run by the Jesuits, a Catholic religious order which has been around for hundreds of years and is known for, among other things it's work in education.

Hey, mildly off topic, but have you guys ever heard that if Georgetown would renounce their Jesuit identity then they would be in consideration for the Ivy League? Our sports are good enough. Somebody once told me that rumor, and I don't know if there's any validity to it.

it's a myth. most people that put it out as truth are people that probably wanted to go to an ivy league (forgetting that other schools outside the league are just as rigorous and prestigious) but didn't get in.
