If I were to transfer from my community college to UIC to get my bachelors degree will the grades I get in the first semester of classes that I take there combine with my current GPA from my transferable courses or will it start fresh?

If not, thanks you've answered my question.

If so, what about classes that aren't transferable?

Every colleges that you apply to plan on transferring to, will take your credits from the courses that you’ve taken at another less prestigious university, only if they’re equivalent to the school’s catalog that you want to transfer to.

Most universities will have your GPA start fresh. However, one thing to look out for is Latin Honors at graduation (cum laude, etc) - some will look at your entire GPA history for those awards. SJSU is one that comes to mind, I’m sure there are plenty of others.

What does “Departmental Distinction” mean? Any ideas? I just see that if I maintain a 3.5 GPA in my major courses and a 3.0 overall I will have “departmental distinction”

And it does say that transferred courses will count towards that… but what does that even mean? lol. I do not see a definition anywhere within the schools website and google brings up nothing. Does it just mean like… “hey good job” sort of like an honor roll thing?

Also, semi-related. Let’s say I have 65 credits from my community college (all transferable) but UIC only accepts 60. Do I just pick which ones don’t count? Like eliminate 2 electives? But then I’d only have 59 since all of them are 3 credits each.
