I've been operating a small business from my boarding school dormitory and it has become quite profitable (funded all my personal expenses, allowed me to buy a new pair of skis, pays for my flights home at the end of each semester and lets me travel around europe quite a bit). I have re-invested in this small business multiple times and it has only gotten bigger. Would the admissions committee at UPenn really like this? I moved to a Swiss boarding school in 11th grade to do the IB diploma program and I needed some pocket money (parents are unemployed) so I started this small business and it became much larger than I anticipated. Any insight is welcome. Thanks in advance!

If you are interested in Wharton that will look great, but don’t get me wrong having your own business looks great whether you want an MBA or not! It shows you have entrepreneurial spirit and the ability to DO things. It’ll look great on a resume; and it would NEVER look bad just to clarify lol.

Thanks, I’m applying for the College of Engineering and hopefully I can do the M&T program as well because it just makes the most sense for me as far as my interests go. Thanks again!

Honestly you don’t need to have any business experience to be accepted to Wharton. The fact that you have already started a business will surely help however, focus more on what you can contribute to the campus. M&T is really hard to get into so if you don’t get in you can just switch in when you have a really good GPA. Admissions teams craft entire classes so that each member selected will have a place in the community. If you want to focus on how you want to become the entrepreneur of the group then so be it.

Btw- I am a current Wharton student who does work study in the admissions office. Just set yourself a part and you will get in.

@Taylordiem1025 Thanks for the advice. My common app essay focuses mostly on the reasons/thoughts behind the birth of the business but then I explained how it has been a learning experience for me that opened a ton of doors. Both of my parents are unemployed so having this extra income while I have been finishing high school at an international boarding school in switzerland (full ride scholarship) let me take advantage of a lot of opportunities that were always closed to me before. Hopefully I’ll be joining you on campus this fall.
