Does it help being a minority when you apply?

I just want to know if it helps at all to be a minority. I know that the University of Michigan used to give minorities an advantage (several years ago). If it is not allowed, do colleges still use it with anyone knowing.

Yes. It helps GREATLY if you are a underrepresented minority.

I have a 3.6 and a 29 on the ACT. My friend has a 3.6 and a 2060 (1360) SAT. Similar ECs, recs, essays. She's black. I got deferred from Michigan, she got accepted to Penn.

It really helps, and regardless of what colleges tell you, they use it in their admissions process.

Thats what I expected. That is very weird. What races are minorities in the U.S.

Asian , Black , Hispanic/Latino , Pacific Islander . Did I miss any?

When you say asian, does all of asia count, or does it mean just indian and chinese. Because I am part russian, so does that count.

Asian - not Japan, Korea, or China.

Russian would count.

ok, thats cool. I'm glad. But how much would it help. Would be if I was like on the border of getting in.
