Does it hurt if a lot of people in my school are applying this year?

Our class is a pretty strong class, so every top college gets lots of applications from my school this year. I'm wondering if colleges (PomonaC here) have a limit (of course, an approximate instead of a definite one) to the number of students they accept from the same school?

Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks!

When D (Pomona '09) applied, three of her classmates also applied (out of a class of 1,960+). She applied EDI as did one other classmate, and thought that she had no chance of getting accepted since she felt the other classmate was a much stronger candidate. Well, admissions does look at who else is from your school is applying, but when reviewing apps, actually compares you to the entire applicant pool. I don’t believe they set an actual limit on the number they will accept from the same school, but of course, they do aim for diversity and accepting students from a variety of schools does help.

Long story short, both she and the other EDI applicant were accepted. As for the other two who applied RD, one was accepted, and the other was rejected.

Hope that helps, and good luck!

From my D’s class, I believe either 2 of 3 or 2 of 4 who applied ED got in. For both her older brother’s and her class, there were probably 20 or so who applied in total. I think 6 or 7 got in each time. So yes, I think it can be a problem if your school is one where about 15% of the students apply, but otherwise, I wouldn’t worry about it. As Little Mother said, they want to spread it around, but there don’t seem to be any quotas per school.
