Does it matter if my CC certifies my IGETC before I would transfer next Fall?

Hello Everyone,

I have a question regarding IGETC certification and admissions into a UC. I attended UCI for one quarter, before taking a break from school. I have returned to my local CC and completed my IGETC and will have my 60 units complete by the end of Spring. However, when I submitted my transcripts to my local CC from Irvine, they did not count 2 classes as there was not a similar course for them to compare it to. Thus, according to my local CC I will be short of 60 units and therefor not able to certified for IGETC by the end of Spring 2013. However, when the UC's review my application, they will obviously see the courses I took at UCIrvine and therefor I will be above the 60 units and qualify. My question is, do I need to worry about getting certified by my CC, or does the only thing that matters is that the UC admissions people will be able to see that I completed the 60 units? Sorry if that was unclear. Thanks so much

I don’t think IGETC needs a certain total amount of units to be considered completed, just that you took all the classes required to complete IGETC. Regardless, the most important thing for admission is your 60 units, IGETC is not necessarily needed for admission, but the 60 units definitely are. If the UCs you are applying for count your units from UCI towards the 60, then you don’t need to worry about having IGETC certified (again, I don’t think you need a total number of units to have it certified.)

Thanks for the reply,

You are right. I talked with an adviser and the 60 units are not part of IGETC. The 60 units are what is required to transfer into a UC at the junior level.
