Does it matter where I volunteer?

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but does it matter if we volunteer at a non-profit organization or not? My mother says that colleges only accept volunteering if it's done as a non-profit organization.

Although I'm not 100%, I think the fact that you devoted your time to a cause is more meaningful to a college rather than what it was for. Of course, this isn't meant to be taken out of context but as long as your devoting yourself to something you care about, is beneficial, is positive, etc, you're good.

Colleges like it if you volunteer and get no compensation at all. It's obviously going to look better if you went and helped the local humane society or battered women's shelter and not photocopied papers for your parent's company for free. Interviewers tend to ask why you do ________ for _________ and if you do it for a organization that serves a cause you care about a lot, then that question will be a lot easier to answer.

try to volunteer doing something you already enjoy. for example, if you love basketball, then you could volunteer coaching little kids or something like that. be creative.

I volunteered at my local library, which isn't a non-profit organization, and I got into some great colleges, so I'd agree with eyebeg2differ and say that as long as you're volunteering your time for something that you are passionate about (I'm passionate about books!), then it will be so much better than if you volunteer for something simply to volunteer for something

Ok, cool! I want to volunteer at a retirement home (I must be one of the few teenagers alive that actually really like old people and not little kids!), but my mother said that she has some qualms about me volunteering there.

I volunteer for a historical society and art museum. neither are non-profit, and I hope it doesn't matter, because I chose those places because I'm actually interestd in the work I do and I'm passionate about history and art, not just because I wanted volunteer hours or something.

^ that actually sounds pretty interesting.

i volunteer at Central Park Summerstage, which is a music festival with mostly free indie concerts and some benefit shows every summer. I don't do this to get volunteer hours because I already have enough of that, but I am extremely passionate about music and immersing myself in NYC culture. Also, I've also gotten to meet some of my favorite musicians there(I got to hug Fiona Apple!), so that isn't too bad either :D

Basically, you should volunteer at things relevant to your interests. It's a lot more worthwhile for colleges and yourself.

OMG ARE YOU SERIOUS
I AM SO JEALOUS OF YOU THAT I DON'T CARE THAT I'M WRITING IN CAPS EVEN THOUGH IT USUALLY ANNOYS ME LIKE HELL

did you see the arctic monkeys last september?
a ton of my friends went. i was this close holds up fingers to show distance between touching fingernails to going, and then at the last minute my overprotective crazy mother decided that she wouldn't let me cause it was the day before school started.

how did you get that gig?
I'm so jealous
haha

YES!! I was there! I'm sorry you couldn't go :( That concert was awesome though because Voxtrot opened and I LOVE them too.

Summerstage lets you volunteer for whatever concert you want as long as you let them know early. I had to arrive about 2 hours earlier to help set up and there were already people lining up to get in. They were so angry when security let me in and not them haha. Anyway, you can always ask to volunteer this summer if you want. I know I'll be there!

Internships are looked upon more favorably imo

thanks art_star, I definitely think I'm going to do that
haha you don't know how much I love AM. I was mad cause they're probably not gonna go on tour here for while, they'll be working on their new album or whatev. so I don't care when their next concert is gonna be here, but I'm going no matter what =)
