As a computer science major, does it really matter whether I go to UC Berkeley or San Diego? Is Berkeley that much better to where it would make a difference to employers?

Cal EECS is one of the best in the nation, and it’s located near Silicon Valley. If you are admitted to both schools and are sure that you want to study CS then Cal is the obvious choice.

That said, CS majors are hired from many, many different schools. Doing well at UCSD is going to be more helpful in the long run than limping along at Cal.

You have to choose a school in a location that has a good study environment for you. To me, Cal is a cool place to visit, but it has many distractions within and surrounding the campus. So, I ended up deciding not to apply to Cal, and I went to UC Davis instead. School prestige helps, but five years after you get your first job, nobody’s going to care. So if you like San Diego better than Cal, go for it.

I’d say so if you’d like to work for Blizzard Entertainment or something like that and want to land that company as a first job. One of my friends worked hard to get into UC Berkeley to specifically do programming for them.

However, I think your chances of getting the job wouldn’t be that much less either. UCSD’s a good school.
