So there are acutally good parts of Baltimore? It isn’t just a gh…a bad town?

It’s called Charm City for a reason. The Harbor, Fells Point, Federal Hill, Mount Vernon, Hampden…

Lol I guess I was so focused on the college I didn’t do research into the actual city. I guess I will start doing that. lol :P

You don’t necessarily need to research teh city, just know that by looking at schools in cities (JHU/Penn/UChicago/WashU/Yale) you are getting both good and bad aspects of cities. Some people are happier in cities (like myself–I’ve lived in Chicago, DC, Baltimore, and Paris–suburbia is hell to me), while others only see themselves happy at a suburban school like Princeton or Northwestern, or hell, a rural school like Oberlin. But no school in a city is going to be the idyllic playground of UC Santa Barbara or whatever. Instead, you get (to different extents) totally awesome nightlife, culture, art, history, pro sports games, endless fun things to do and new places to explore. The tradeoff? You’ll have to be street smart, and realize that there are areas off campus (the campus in JHU’s case is gorgeous and totally idyllic, feels like Harvard) that you probably shouldn’t be going to alone at night.

@bonanza yea sry i got that mixed up. ditto what u said.

@zombiedante baltimore is just as bad as any other city, like what mastermargarita said. if you walk any more than 2 blocks off campus, then you may be mugged/raped(if u are a girl). I’m not joking when i say this because when i was a freshman here, the security people took us all on a security walk and throughout the walk, they mentioned where some person got mugged/raped and the places were only like 2 blocks off campus. Having said that, you don’t really have any business walking more than 2 blocks off campus because there simply isnt anything but sketchy houses/dark alleys more than 2 blocks off campus. If you stay in the hopkins campus area and maybe like 1 block off campus, you should have nothing to worry about because JHU tightened up security like crazy the past few years. If you want to explore Baltimore, there are free shuttles to towson mall, the inner harbor, and the medical school. There isn’t much else to go in Baltimore other than those places. I’ve lived there 7 years when i was a kid.

O_o yeah…this is like kinda freaking me out…UHH if only I still had a chance at going to MIT!!! That was like so perfect but whatever lol

well most of time you will be on campus because like i said, you really don’t have any business to do more than 2 blocks off campus. All the class buildings are on campus, the parties are all at frat houses/apartments that are right next to campus, the residence halls are all either on campus or across the street from campus, subway and chipotle (the only 2 fast food places near hopkins) are all 1 block away, and maxie’s (the bar/pizza place everyone hangs out at) is also across the street. So you really shouldn’t be wandering more than 2 blocks off campus and if you wanted to go to inner harbor, towson mall, or med campus, there’s free shuttles (like i said before). also, you don’t have to worry about your safety as long as you are within 2 blocks around campus because there’s a ton of security (especially at night) and these security lamps (if u push them, a really loud police siren sound goes off and all the lights go on) at your disposal if you don’t feel safe. Also, there’s a JHU escort van that operates from 5pm to like 7am or something like that that will give u a ride to wherever within the vicinity u want if u are scared to walk.

long story short, as long as you don’t purposefully seek for trouble, ur not gonna get any

Baltimore is underrated. It has some nice museums, a great aquarium, the inner harbor, major league sports, and a decent amount of culture. It also has a few good corporations headquartered there. On the other hand, it has bad crime problems. Homewood is in a much better neighborhood than the medical school.

@ZombieDante

You sound like an immature, whiny little brat. Please don’t drag your ignorant attitude to Hopkins.

^Harsh much?

I just don’t want to go to a bad neighborhood, been there done that; not again. Also thank you for joining just to say that. -_-

Also I want to you to remember what it felt like making a college decision (assuming you are going to JHU). It’s very stressful so I am sorry for coming off like a “whiny little brat” but at the same time I don’t need your attitude.

According to my little ACT Score Report, 42% receive FA through need (probably Baltimore students), and 5% receive FA through merit.

Baltimore scholars makes up about 2% of the class and I suspect it’s considered merit aid and not need based aid as it is listed as a scholarship. Nowhere near 42% of the class comes from Maryland, let alone Baltimore city.

at jhu, lots of students from all over the country are on FA. An extremely small percentage come from Baltimore. That being said, the Baltimore Scholars progarm is not what Ospry portrayed it as. I knew 3 or 4 Baltimore Scholars in my days at JHU, and all were middle class smart kids that went to City/Poly/BoA and graduated near the top of the class. I’m sure there are some poor kids who were dealers at the Towers for the Barksdale Organization or something (not literally; Avon Barksdale is not a real person) but most of the Baltimore Scholars are just regular kids. And tehre are also about 10 of them every year. It’s like 2% of the class and really not worth thinking about.

And Zombie, if you don’t want to live in a city, that’s your perogative, but remember, many many excellent schools are in bad neighborhoods, and if you rule out JHU for that reason, you should also rule out WashU/Uchicago/Penn/Yale/Columbia.

Lol no I am still in love with JHU, it was just kinda shocking. Anyway talking about JHU what is the party scene like?

pretty good actually. but i wouldnt know much since im one of those people who stay in my room all night long fridays and saturdays.

It’s great, I went out like 4 times a week all four years. Parties at JHU + nightlife around the city.

@osprey099 I will be the same way…do you hate that you don’t go to parties? Do people make fun of you? Are there others?

@MasterMargarita … :/

Personally, I don’t like going to college parties because it involves drinking and my body lacks the enzyme (aldehide dehydrogenase) that breaks down alcohol so if I as much as touch alcohol, my face turns red and I feel like I will need to vomit. Having said that, if you don’t drink at college parties (usually hosted by frats), you will find it very boring and feel out of place.

People don’t make fun of me because of that (idk why they would) because the ones who do go to parties don’t know me in the first place. Just hang around a group of people who have similar interests/hobbies as you and u’ll be fine.

Oh… :/

Zombie what are you looking for in a school? You’re going to be hard-pressed to find one that DOESN’T have a good party scene.
