I see a few scholarships that may end up applying to our S19. The Promise Scholarship or the Distinguished Academic Scholarship might be given to him. He will also submit a portfolio of visual art, so he might be in the running for a studio art scholarship.
Can anyone share stats of students who received these awards? Or maybe even bright kids who did not? I think the Promise and Distinguished Academic Scholarships are given to the top of the admitted class. I’m completely in the dark as to how accomplished the art would have to be to get that award.
I’d love to hear anyone’s experience with merit at Kenyon.
I received the Kenyon Promise Scholarship ($10,000/year) with these stats:
GPA: 4.0 unweighted
Class Rank: 1 of 91
Residence: rural Upstate New York
SAT I: 2380 (only took once)
SAT II: 790 Bio-M, 740 Math II, 710 Spanish
AP’s: 5’s in US History, English Lit, and English Comp; taking Macro and Microeconomics now (everything offered at my school)
Community Service: 300+ hours of tutoring middle school students
ECs: 4 years varsity tennis (captain), 6 years marching band (captain), 2 years assistant editor of school newspaper, National Honor Society; I play 8+ musical instruments and am in every music activity offered at our school
Awards/Honors: National Merit Finalist, Presidential Scholar Nominee, 2 time winner of Angelo Melaro writing contest
Intended Major: Neuroscience
I hope this helps you evaluate how difficult these scholarships are to attain, because I was personally very surprised at the level of competition for earning merit aid. Good luck with the scholarship search!
@mde1111 Thanks! Super helpful. And very impressive!
I got 15k/yr from Kenyon and 25k/yr from Grinnell (You’ve mentioned looking at both schools, I think.) I feel like your son and I are very similar in terms of what we looked/are looking for in a college! I can PM you the rest of my results if it’d be helpful.
