Does legacy matter?

I applied RD and I think everything on my application is okay - essays, definitely ECs, etc - except for my GPA. I have a 3.7/4W, or a 92%. My school doesn’t do weighted GPAs. Kids from my school have gotten in with similar stats but I’m super anxious and worried that I’m not going to get in due to Michigan’s increased competitiveness. My dad, however, went to Michigan and is obsessed with the school, although I don’t think he’s donated any money. Do you think my legacy status will be enough to push me over the edge, if I’m even on the edge, or is my GPA a killer? If you need more context, I’m from NJ, my SAT is a 2140 (which is hopefully adequate?), and I’ve emailed my state rep and told her that U-M is my #1 and I will definitely attend if I’m accepted.

It might help for oos applicants but u just happen to live in one of the most popular and competitive states for umich. I heard that legacy doesn’t matter much but that might be for in state. Remember u can always transfer if things don’t work out. Good luck!

Are you full pay?

@brantly yes

@quiteabeaan Legacy will definitely help. I have seen so many legacy students from the NYC metro area get in, many squeaking in at the last moment around April 1. But you need to be in the ballpark. Your SAT is fine, your gpa is low, unless you took the most rigorous course load offered at your school–or at least take half of your courses in honors and at least 3 or 4 AP courses? If not, then your chances will be less. Also, how was your Why Michigan essay? That is important. Also your Community essay is importsmt as well as your common app essay? Were they well written? Also did you show interest by attending a function when Admissions officer came to your school or your local area? Did you visit Ann Arbor? Michigan considers and records interest. Also, did you get good recommendations? If you answer all the above postively in your favor, then I believe your legacy status will get you in when Michigan releases their final decisions at the end of this month.

also alumni donations don’t matter much to admissions unless your family donated like 1 billion dollars and they named a school after your family.
