Does major affect admissions decision?

I REALLY want to get into Columbia, so I don't want to do anything wrong or not 'me' on the application. So, for the major I was going to put down Psychology or Philosophy. However, it's just because I'm interested in the majors; my extracurricular record or academic profile has nothing to root these majors in. I got a B in Psychology when I took it at a community college, and have never taken philosophy.

How does an adcom look at your major? Do they even care? Should I put something else down?

they dont care....many change their mind and colleges expect that.

I don't know if I'd go so far as to say that they don't care, I do think that it helps to build an overall profile of where the person will fit academically into the community. I also think that it helps when you have a demonstrated passion. For example, I did state french competitions and have taken AP lang and lit and I put down French as a prospective major. It sort of ties up the whole package. But this is just my outsider's take on it.

This is a very perceptive and insightful comment, especially given that you're only a pre-frosh who just went through the process. I think you hit the nail.

Thanks Columbia 2002 :) I appreciate that!

For some sick reason, I'm fascinated by the admissions process even after getting in.

me too, i still can't believe why they'd accept me...perhaps it was my freakish weird essay, they probably never read something so explicit in their lives..haha

Ah, I've had the same preoccupation. I plan on majoring in something like Political Science, Psychology, or Comp. Ethnic Studies and I've always gotten Bs in math and my SAT Math score is significantly lower than my CReading & Writing. Will the AdCom take this into consideration when I apply next year?

I think it comes down to the overall profile. South Asian Pre-Med students are not exactly in short supply. Prospectve female physics majors with a deomnstrable past interest? Probably a lot more in demand. And so forth. It's something that can help seperate you from the masses if you have other stuff on your application to back up that interest.

sofi, even if you don't have any ECs to back up your major, you can still use the essays to convey why you're so interested in psy and phil. Btw, why didn't you pursue your interest beyond high school and why are you interested in psy and phil?

Not really. There is no shortage of applicants who have good grades/scores in both verbal/english/history and math/science.

Columbia cares about your intended major. In a promotion seminar, I was told. Among Ivy schools, only columbia and U penn care much about your major.
