Does more people from my high school applying to the same university as me lower my chances?

Specifically for Ivy leagues. Will I be compared to other ppl who attend my high school who also applied?

Some say it does happen and some say it doesn’t. Worry about yourself before worrying about others.

Bump!

Schools are trying to balance their classes. At some point it probably does hurt to have too much competition from within your own school but there is zero you can do about that. Just work at creating a good list of schools to apply that align with your interests/goals/finances/ability.

A few comments:

  1. You are competing for a spot against a much bigger pool of applicants than just your HS. Colleges do not have a quota on acceptances by HS.
  2. Don’t worry about things you can’t control.
  3. Recognize that Ivy schools have under a 10% acceptance rate (many are lower) and must be considered to be a huge reach for any unhooked applicant.

I attended a lot of college information sessions where they talked about this. Basically, they’ll be comparing your course load to theirs. For example, if you take a lot of AP courses and your classmates don’t, that will hurt their applications. It’s the colleges’ way of ensuring that they don’t disqualify students just because their schools don’t offer the same opportunities. However, if the other applicants are really stellar, it will make admissions harder for all of you. I hope this helps! Good luck
