there a few of the top students in my class applying to medical programs (ba/md) at schools that I am interested in for just the regular school of arts and sciences. Now, i feel they are gonna hurt my chances because they have amazing grades but are going for these programs in schools that are lower for them. For instance, Columbia caliber students applying to GWU, Penn state, BU for these programs. If they get rejected from the combined degree programs, will they get rolled back to general admissions??? Will this hurt me???

There has been a lot said lately, especially in the Wash Post, about the effect of having a large number of students applying to the same college. I think it is only common sense that a college that is seeking diversity can only take so many people from a single high school. However, the type of high school that has at least 20-30 people applying to each Ivy is a very, good high school. Often, the college will take many of the the 20-30 people who apply. The fact remains, however, that they would have taken a lot more if the applicants had not been concentrated in one place. Yes, students from the outstanding and prestigious high schools do compete against applicants from their own high school more than they compete against the general applicant pool.

Having said that, how many students from your high school are applying to GWU, PSU and BU. You may not have to worry about a few extra people in the applicant pool from your high school any more than you have to worry about the general applicant pool.
