I've heard that one of the most important things one must achieve in their essay is to tell a story, to show and not tell.

Well, my essay is in a different format than most people's (those who read it will see why)...and I'm not sure if it tells enough of a story or if it tells more than it shows. Can anyone take a look and let me know if I should change it around to be more of a traditional, story-type essay or if it seems fine the way it is?

“Show, don’t tell” doesn’t necessarily implying writing a story that has a beginning, middle, and end. All that needs to come through the essay is a sense of who you are. When people say “show, don’t tell,” they really mean that you shouldn’t just say something like “I am a very creative person,” - you should give examples of instances that highlight your creativity. One of my common app essays is also not in the traditional beginning-to-end narrative style, but it contains a lot of anecdotes and examples that (I think) show who I am as a person.

Unfortunately, I’m a 2014-er, so I don’t think you’d want me to read your essay, but good luck! I’m sure it’s great. :)

Yeah, that’s what I hope “show, don’t tell” means, but I’m still a little unsure about my own essay because…I don’t know, it just doesn’t seem like the archetypal essay that many say the colleges are looking for. If you’re a 2014er, I wouldn’t mind an essay exchange if you’re up for it. I just prefer not to send essays to 2014er’s without an exchange…hope that makes sense. :)

I’d totally be up for an essay exchange. Just PM me your email address and we can go right ahead.

I’ll be working on college applications all day, so I’m not sure when exactly I’ll be able to read yours, but I’ll do my best to get it back to you by the end of the day.

Haha, yeah, my day is pretty much going to be spent the same way (college apps, college apps, and maybe–if I have time–more college apps), but I’ll try to get yours back by the end of the day too. I’ll go PM you my address.

Anyone else willing to read too and tell me what they think?
