Does Northeastern waive application fees?

If so, how do I go about waiving my fee. Do I have to visit campus, email them... or what?

If I email them requesting a waiver, will they respond?

And if they contact you instead of the other way around, how soon do they do so?

Thanks!

They would send you an invitation to apply for admission. I think they check the information for PSAT to determine it, it came around Sep. or Oct. last year.

I think it might also have to do with geography. My roommate is from California and she got a free application from NU.

There’s a few ways to get any college app fee waived:

College Board has their own fee waiver program here[/url”>http://sat.collegeboard.com/register/sat-fee-waivers]here, which includes SAT tests and college applications.

NACAC also has an application waiver that your counselor has to approve and whatnot here[/url”>http://www.nacacnet.org/CareerDevelopment/Resources/Pages/FeeWaiverFAQ.aspx]here

Usually, if you get free or reduced lunch from your HS, you’ll be eligible for either program.

It’s for financial aid reasons.

I got a v.i.p. application through email but not because of financial aid reasons

Thanks for the answers!

@structural- I’ll look for it around Sept or Oct. , then.

If they don’t send it then I guess I’ll just apply without the waiver. I doubt they’ll waive my application fee even if I tell them my family has two siblings already in college and three more to go (including me). I don’t think I’ll qualify for the college board waiver.

@n01- Really? Around what time did they send you the v.i.p application?

It’s actually funny because I wasn’t even looking to apply to Northeastern but then around I’d say end of January I got a VIP application and now look, I’m going there this fall! I don’t completely remember but I do believe it was end of January, some time just before the deadline.

End of january is so late… I wonder why they’d wait that long?

Ok I apologize, it wasn’t late January as the actual deadline was January 15th, however it was January 11th, which, compared to the deadline is quite late. Here’s the email they sent:

I am writing one last time to remind you that Northeastern’s Regular Decision deadline is approaching on January 15, and I hope to see your application in our pool.

By now you learned about the numerous opportunities here at Northeastern to expand your mind and prepare for the challenges of tomorrow through our innovative experiential learning programs. You also met several wonderful students who are taking advantage of all that a Northeastern education offers and gaining experience that will put them ahead of their peers.

Isn’t it time for you to consider the world’s most powerful learning experience?

As a reminder, we are waiving your application fee. When you apply online, simply select “Fee Waiver requested” and we will waive your fee when we receive your application.

The deadline is January 15. I look forward to receiving your application.

wow, that is so close! If they waited another 4 days, you’d be in another college right now! :-O

Why do you think they sent it? They must have had a reason because it seems like they really, really wanted you to apply. lol.

I can’t afford to wait that long. I hope they send something in September. I think my PSAT is okay, but I’m not sure.

I got a couple of random VIP applications. Luckily one was for Brandeis where I was gonna apply anyways so that saved me some $ (and was the only VIP application I used). I think they get your e-mail from PSATs or SATs. Might be how my roommate got hers (again, with her she’s from CA so NU probs wanted geographic diversity [she had high SATs as well]).

Is a VIP application the same as a regular application, except for the waived fee?

And I live around Boston, so I don’t think I’ll get one based on geographic diversity. :-/ But I’ll wait it out and see.

I’m from New Jersey, so not too far not too close.

I’m not sure about the regular application and whether there’s an essay, but I know that the VIP application doesn’t require a special essay for Northeastern. You still have plenty of time no worries.

Make sure Northeastern is not showing up in your bulk or spam folder!

On the common app there wasn’t a a special essay for Northeastern either, so I don’t think anyone has to write an essay. There are a ton of people from Jersey-- I think they try to reach out to parts of the country that have never heard of Northeastern.

Well that’s my point exactly, I AM from New Jersey and I got a VIP application

^ohhhh I see haha sorry 'bout that. I’m not even going to pretend I know how they choose who get these. They’re quite nice for schools where you were planning on applying anyways and for schools you hadn’t really yet considered!

@no1an- yeah, I should probably make sure I check my spam folder from now on before clearing it.

Thanks everyone for your helpful answers! I’ll keep my fingers crossed! :-)

Hope you get that waived fee!

Thanks! I hope so too!
